Tacos: Hard Shell or Soft Shell

I prefer hard for normal beef tacos.
Soft for other kinds (like Rubio's fish tacos).
I voted hard because I assumed normal tacos.

1. Place a warm soft shell flour tortilla on the counter.
2. Smear the middle generously with warm canned Old El Paso refried beans.
3. Place a warm hard corn taco shell in the middle.
4. Fill with teh goodies.
5. Eat.
6. Repeat.

THANK YOU for posting this, because it made me want to try it and it is SO DAMN GOOD!

What I did was:
Warm up a hard corn shell in the oven
Steam an 8" flour tortilla (place a wire rack over a pan of boiling water)
Put a dollop of Old El Paso refried beans on the center of the flour tortilla and spread it around
Place warm hard shell in center of beans (it's nice because the beans hold it up)
Filled it up with some seasoned beef, some shredded Sargento chipotle cheddar cheese and a 4 cheese Mexican blend
Topped it off with some Santa Fe Packing Company Chunky Salsa
Devour
Repeat x2

Oh, and enjoy a nice cold Sol with a lime.

I used to only eat Hard Shells until Taco Hell screwed up my order once and gave me soft. Now I only eat them. Far less messy and very tasty.

I voted soft shell.

I do like some hard shell tacos, particularly the cheap 2x$1 tacos at Jack in the Box... I don't consider them real Mexican food, but they are a tasty treat.

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants back in CA about 15 miles from the border served tacos that were in between hard and soft, meaning they weren't really soft but weren't crunchy either, but they were really tasty. That was one of my favorite mexican restaurants of all time. Here it is. Haha, got a 1 star rating for food being greasy and bad service. I thought all the GOOD TASTING hole-in-the-wall Mexican food places have greasy food and bad service. 😛

My favorite of course are soft tacos, and I'm not talking about stuff from Taco Bell. I'm talking "real" tacos with two soft corn tortillas, your choice of meat (such as steak, chorizo, carnitas, pastor), chopped onions, cilantro and plenty of salsa muy picante.

There is no such thing as a "soft shell taco." You're eating a burrito.
False
So's your face.

Although I agree that the differences are petty, they aren't the same thing. Soft shell tacos use corn tortillas while burritos use flour tortillas. That said, hard shell FTW!

If you live near excellent mexican food (NM here), soft is the only way to go imo.

The flavor is the major advantage of soft tortillas, because they are often heated and browned first.

Soft shell owns. I love burritos. I actually used to work in a fast food taco joint, and when I whipped up my own food I made some damn good stuff.

Soft shell. No real mexican place uses hard shells for their tacos.

Del Taco/Taco Bell tacos aren't real tacos. It's low grade dog food wedged between a giant dorito.

I bet the vast majority of the people here that voted hard shell never had a real taco from an authentic mexican place.

I like both, but regardless of which is more "authentic" (taco-snobs ... thats a first! 😛 ), as far as I'm concerned soft shell taco's are just burritos in small wraps.

You can make them taste EXACTLY the same. Thus, you have to go for non-taste reasons.

Hard: crumbles and is a mess as all the juices run out the broken crack you just made. But some people like the crunchy feel.

Soft: easy to eat. But some people miss the crunchy feel.

Solution: soft shell taco, with broken chips in it. You get the exact same taste and crunch but without the mess. Also, it is a good way to get rid of those broken chips and broken hard taco shells.

you my friend are a genius

Win. This is how it should be done.

Hard. I usually let them sit for a few minutes to let them soak up some grease, but not so much that they break easily. You have to eat them at the right moment, when they're going from the crunchy state to the soggy state.
