My bet is on another last second temporary thing and then guess what, in January we will be doing this same exact thing yet again.
 
Kinda amazing to me folks are willing to hand over so much to government.

Politicians now find themselves in the enviable position of being able to pass anything just to avert this "X-Date OMG'zers roxy my boxr's" deadline.

Key point being they can pass anything when butted up against this deadline whereas without the deadline they would be held much more accountable for what they pass. The deadline has been made into the worst thing possible, which takes the place of what they will likely pass.
 
Boehner fell flat on his face today. After basically throwing up his hands last week and saying "Let the Senate work it out", he tried to surprise everyone this morning with another House bill that re-treads the same tired ground. Turns out, he can't even get enough support from his caucus to bring it to the floor. Embarrassing.

Prospects are looking pretty grim for a debt ceiling hike or CR by Thursday.
 
I remain as I have been this entire time: unequivocally confident that the US will not default as a result of the current shenanigans. They are, as always, nothing but a dog and pony show of stupidity intended to entertain. Washington plays the part of court jester, frolicking around as an entertaining fool.

It's entirely possible that the demand for what the FDA does will probably mean that once the government collapses it will be provided for in private form. The EPA, probably not so much, it requires absolute authority and the ability to shut down companies. The market does have a vote over whether or not to purchase products that are made dirty, but most people don't see the benefit. So any sort of green industry will be seen as a fringe certification like "fair trade" is now today.

With the government gone, there will be a lot of free resources, I'm sure scientists will be able to gain funding through private means. It's happened all throughout history.

We will find out shortly if anarchy is a real life boogey-man or just a scary story told to us by governmentalists.

Granted neither of us knows for certain the outcome, but we have different viewpoints. I'd wager the significance of the outcome of whether government defaults or not on us personally, is whether we change any viewpoints should we be proved wrong.

If either of us can, that would put us above 95% of Americans.

Default is different than going past this x-date.

Sportage is one of those who has replaced G-d with Government, and he's as militant as only a newly minted evangelical can be.

In general, if your omnipotent being can be killed off by a few hundred recalcitrant politicians, best rethink your choice.
 
It's clear that the only real deal possible, that can pass the House, is one that discards the Tea Party and attracts all 200 Democrat votes and at least 17 Republican votes (there are 432 filled seats, with 3 vacant, and it takes a majority vote - not a tie - to pass a bill).

Sooner or later that's going to happen. Now, it may be that the eventual bill attracts a lot more than 17 (non-Tea-Party) Republican votes, but the only bill that will pass the Senate is one that will attract 0 Tea-Party votes in the House.

So the likely course of this thing is:

1) Compromise reached in the Senate that's almost clean (a little give by the Dems and a little give by the Pubs), that opens government and pushes the debt limit into next year.
2) Cruz delays the Senate vote for a little while, and no vote occurs until after October 17. But there will be enough cash reserves to cover all amounts due until the vote occurs. Cruz will become VERY unpopular with everyone but the Tea Party.
3) The House also passes the bill, but without any Tea Party support. But Boehner and other "Aye" Republican voters will have a defensible position ("I tried as hard as I could for as long as I could, but the country's solvency has to come first.")

Hopefully, this will be the end of the Tea Party as a viable political force.

Hopefully, this fiasco will prevent brinkmanship as a viable strategy in the future.

I'm starting to think McConnell and friends are actually going to do it.

They've been able to maintain a firm party-before-country posture up to now, expecting them to change when it could spell political disaster for them might be futile.

But then in pulling this shit I guess they are pretty much inviting disaster in 2016 anyway. Good riddance. With politicians like the GOTP, who needs enemies?

When it doesn't default can I get your solemn promise that you are going to admit that, having been wrong about that, perhaps the rest of what you said should be looked at cautiously as well? Concur. This, though he won't admit it, even after the government does not default. Still he will not see that his paradigm needs a rework.

It's preventing Obama from implementing any of the rest of his agenda so it's all good. The admin is also too incompetent to set up the Obamacare "exchange" websites so Obamacare will get delayed for a year as well until its eventual implosion.
