For example, lookit this one - if you took a baseball bat, even if the damn thing didn't shatter (which it most likely will do), the handle's construction (marble?plastic?metal?) will jar your hands too much to use it properly . . ..

Having said what I said, I'm really, really, REALLY tempted to get these ones . . . but then again, they'd sit in the corner of my room, sheathed, rusting away . . . :(:(:(

It's actually very sturdy. I highly doubt a baseball bat would shatter it. As for the handle, its metal.

If I was actually going to use a sword, I would either use my Katana, or my Pakistan made short broad sword.

Edited for latest reply: A little oil keeps them in a nice rust-free state. Besides, they are cool as hell to look at.

Don't own any swords. But if I had to buy one, I'd buy Molotoch the slayer sword.

Good choices - but what kind of Katanas? The real ones go for at least $3,000, if you find them really, relly cheap . . ..

Mine have been sheathed for years, with the exception of cleaning them every couple months. They don't rust unless you're cleaning them in the swimming pool and putting them away wet.

<edit> CRAP. The DNS propagation hasn't gone through on my domain yet. I made a few changes. Try the links tomorrow.

Remind me never to steal one of your goats or impregnate your slaves...

WTF is that supposed to mean? And where the hell did it come from? :| Ass.
Jeeezus, Nik!

You posted links to what appear to be lethal weapons and you question:
"Remind me never to steal one of your goats or impregnate your slaves..."
(which would indicate that that the alleged respondant was afraid of what a sword wielding FFMCobalt might do)

Unwind a little.

I went to school with a guy who's dad has a Japanese-made Katana with a white-ish handle. I think it's ivory, but his dad quickly put it away after realizing that it was out when he had guests. I saw it later on that night after most of the party guests had gone. There were still blood stains on it. The story is that it was pulled from a group of dead raiders on a Japanese beach in the late 1800's and sold for an extremely high price, which he wouldn't tell me. Creapy. If it really is what he says it is, then it's the real thing --metal folded over 200 times and tempered to hell. :Q

I don't think they bought that sword for it to actually be used in combat, I think they bought it as a cool looking thing to put in their room or house.

If it's really expensive, he should have qualified inspectors inspect it. The "real" katanas have records and are really regarded as "treasures".

And I'm sure you know this, but that blood's going to eat away at the blade . . ..

Whoops, EDIT - not 'you, but rather 'he' . . ..

If you keep them maintained, they'll last centuries. Literally.
As for swords, if its not usuable, I dont want it. I dont like display models myself. Also, usuable doesnt mean thousands of dollars. My and my friends used to make them ourselves, they looked crude, half rusty and mean as all hell. And they WORKED. (Except the one time a quillion snapped off and my friend was nearly de-brained)

Ah, a man after me own heart:D. 'Cept for that crazy-swinging pieces of rust bit(no offense);).
Well, it's a paradoxical view, I suppose, but while I regard weapons as 'tools', the weapon and its handling should be respected and taken care of. It is truly an 'art', IMO.

You could use them. Once they are sharpened, it won't take much effort to break the skin. Unless they are some mentally disturbed person, they won't have another sword on them to block with.

As for the Katana I have, It belonged to my grandfather, and he got it from his. All I know is its old, but I never took it anywhere to have it examined.

No, but the quillions on some display models would peel away like wrappers from candy. The blades are almost always good steel, but theres far more then just the blade. Will the handle rattle or ring? How is the blade attached? (You'll feel like a jackass when your handle snaps off!) Will the quillions hold up to stopping another blade?

Well, we didnt want to spend a couple hundred on something we were gonna bang up and nick. So we kept the nice ones in the sheath and built or practice ones. Aside from that, we could customize as far as blade length, handle length, handle wrappings, quillion type and size and overall weight and balance. We actually got very very good with them too.

Common sense?
Common sense #2?
Common sense#3?

but then again, who am I say to tell you what yo're doing is wrong - unorthodox? Yes. Dangerous? Like Jehovah fvcks up a perfect chance with the ladies (that'd be a hell-motherfvcking YES!)! But wrong? No.

Yeah, it wasnt the smartest thing we ever did. Cours,e me shooting my friend wasnt very smart either, but it happened. Think of Buzz Lightyear meets King of the Hill with a dash of LotR, and you have my childhood. :D
Besides, knowing if you block wrong or overextend gets you a swift cut and trickle of blood (OR if your lucky a hard smack with the flat of the blade) instead of a whack from a stick makes you far more cautious and calculating in your attacks. Also, you learn VERY quickly what you see on TV does NOT work in real life. Try that nifty spin move once and you'll quickly understand Hollywood special effects. ;)

I want to collect them as a hobby, not go around lopping peoples heads off. Sheesh.

Yeah but why collect swords that don't really work? I have one of those swords and now I realize how worthless it is.

Ah, my friend, you underestimate the power of bokken (wooden swords) . . . there are several accounts of heroes (like Miyamoto Musashi(real person who actually did this), or other heroes mentioned in fictional stories) using bokken to kill opponents armed with a live bladed weapon . . . obviously you've never been hit by a bokken/escrima stick/shinai to know . . .. Only if you knew . . ..

And yeah, that TV stuff is complete crap. Bruce-Lee-drinking-Pepsi crap.
