If I was actually going to use a sword, I would either use my Katana, or my Pakistan made short broad sword.

Edited for latest reply: A little oil keeps them in a nice rust-free state. Besides, they are cool as hell to look at.

Mine have been sheathed for years, with the exception of cleaning them every couple months. They don't rust unless you're cleaning them in the swimming pool and putting them away wet.

I went to school with a guy who's dad has a Japanese-made Katana with a white-ish handle. I think it's ivory, but his dad quickly put it away after realizing that it was out when he had guests. I saw it later on that night after most of the party guests had gone. There were still blood stains on it. The story is that it was pulled from a group of dead raiders on a Japanese beach in the late 1800's and sold for an extremely high price, which he wouldn't tell me. Creapy. If it really is what he says it is, then it's the real thing --metal folded over 200 times and tempered to hell. :Q

I don't think they bought that sword for it to actually be used in combat, I think they bought it as a cool looking thing to put in their room or house.

As for swords, if its not usuable, I dont want it. I dont like display models myself. Also, usuable doesnt mean thousands of dollars. My and my friends used to make them ourselves, they looked crude, half rusty and mean as all hell. And they WORKED. (Except the one time a quillion snapped off and my friend was nearly de-brained)

Well, it's a paradoxical view, I suppose, but while I regard weapons as 'tools', the weapon and its handling should be respected and taken care of. It is truly an 'art', IMO.

You could use them. Once they are sharpened, it won't take much effort to break the skin. Unless they are some mentally disturbed person, they won't have another sword on them to block with.

As for the Katana I have, It belonged to my grandfather, and he got it from his. All I know is its old, but I never took it anywhere to have it examined.

No, but the quillions on some display models would peel away like wrappers from candy. The blades are almost always good steel, but theres far more then just the blade. Will the handle rattle or ring? How is the blade attached? (You'll feel like a jackass when your handle snaps off!) Will the quillions hold up to stopping another blade?

Well, we didnt want to spend a couple hundred on something we were gonna bang up and nick. So we kept the nice ones in the sheath and built or practice ones. Aside from that, we could customize as far as blade length, handle length, handle wrappings, quillion type and size and overall weight and balance. We actually got very very good with them too.

Besides, knowing if you block wrong or overextend gets you a swift cut and trickle of blood (OR if your lucky a hard smack with the flat of the blade) instead of a whack from a stick makes you far more cautious and calculating in your attacks. Also, you learn VERY quickly what you see on TV does NOT work in real life. Try that nifty spin move once and you'll quickly understand Hollywood special effects.

Ah, my friend, you underestimate the power of bokken (wooden swords) . . . there are several accounts of heroes (like Miyamoto Musashi(real person who actually did this), or other heroes mentioned in fictional stories) using bokken to kill opponents armed with a live bladed weapon . . . obviously you've never been hit by a bokken/escrima stick/shinai to know . . ..
