- What's the point of paying "dues" of hundreds of dollars a semester? If you don't even get to LIVE at the house? It's going towards kegs. MAYBE a little towards rent, but those who live there pay that. It goes towards beer. Oh right, and I get to drink no where NEAR the amount of beer I paid for. Random ass people coming in also get to drink it. I can save the $400 or so, and buy it for MYSELF.

You clearly have NO idea how much money it costs to throw a party. You can save the $400 and buy the beer yourself and drink it yourself. If you want to throw a PARTY, you buy beer for other people to drink.

no offence dude but 2 kegs of cheap beer and a lot of cups cost like 150$

and unless you are throwing some sort of theme party that is what most college parties are

college party =/= frat party

Frat party =

dj's, stages, fencing, porta potty, security, kegs, hards

<--- former president/treasurer

I know a thing or two about fraternal finances.

Parties
kegs = 76 bucks each, usually buy 6-8 for a medium/large party
fencing = 400
security = 400-800
cups/ice/etc supplies = 150
jungle juice - 4/4/8, so 8 handles of vodka per container of JJ = ~110 bucks, x 3 or 4 tubs of jungle juice
+ additional hard liquor if you want to get crazy
we had a spotlight for a few years, 400 bucks out the door

and then (we) had weekly exchanges, so those were about 500 bucks a pop....

then you got dues for whatever council you're in, fraternal fees such as yearbook, events that you gotta go to, etc. then you gotta pay for the house. and then supplies for the goddamn house. and then you gotta pay for for supplies you need during pledging. and so on, and so forth.

If you don't see where the dues money goes that's fine, but houses are rarely swimming in money. I fronted so much money those years it's not even funny.

Security? WTF kind of security are you talking for $800? Sign me up. Of ALL the houses I know, brothers have shifts of being at the door, watching for cops, etc. They don't pay for security. Jungle Juice is no where NEAR worth the money -- it's fucking garbage. Fencing? What the hell did you need fencing for. I don't think I know a single house that has had a party that required a stage nor a dj. I guess your house was l33t.

what size school did you go to? because im 100% positive this is where your missunderstanding comes from, i went to a small school but i know what is being spoken about here in terms of size of party and what is required

just think about those college movies that have parties, the do happen IRL

Around 5k students. Pretty small compared to most. I'm not misunderstanding anything, I just haven't heard of any house here requiring security, or having fencing put up for privacy -- all of them are mostly indoors unless it's some kind of BBQ or something.. but those aren't really "open" parties for anyone to stop by.

when you go to a school of 40000 things are a bit different

oh yeah, I can't believe I didn't mention this yet.

Rush alone is several thousand dollars. That's money that you will NEVER see again, and is a required cost every year.

How big was the frat you were in? Also, how much were dues if you LIVED at the house? I'm assuming that money paid for food, upkeep of the house, etc.

15-20 active members. Dues were 800 if you didn't live at the house, 650 if you did, paid yearly.

Pretty much rolls up into all the costs I specified above. Not all members at the house paid full dues though. If you had the ability then you did, if you were piss poor broke then we worked around it.

Not all houses are the same though.

And yeah, my school is just a little bigger than yours lol

it's like i'm reliving my college life with this thread :heart:

Yea, but with the couple thousand up front when rushing... I guess that pays off for a while. 😛

get out of a dorm and into your own apt ftw!

fixed.
Agreed. Even with having to drive in Erie's horrid winter weather, and freak blizzards in the middle of July (not really, but it wouldn't surprise me much), I still prefer living off-campus in my own place. It's more expensive, too. But I just love not having any roommates or neighbors to deal with.
I was getting close to dropping out because I couldn't handle the "social" living arrangements on campus. Noisy people, drunk idiots making noise and messes every goddamn weekend, which evidently starts Thursday night, and others who simply enjoy making noise to satisfy their ancient primate urges to do so.

Did you get an off campus apt by yourself or did you live with friends/roommates, but you had your own room?
