One doesn't buy a WRX to be concerned about fuel economy ;)

That said, all this thread really proves is that some cars are more sensitive to driving style than other cars. This is why many people never achieve EPA estimates while others can consistently exceed them.
Good point. I don't do much in the way of super-fast acceleration, though I will say that this thing's got a good bit more more get-up-and-go than my Elantra had. Maybe it's the engine power, maybe the drivetrain...don't know for sure.
And I use cruise control whenever I can. Less to think about, and it should let the transmission and engine do a better job of figuring out the ideal settings.

I find I can achieve better fuel economy while not using cruise control...but I'm not typical ;)

Selective use is key. Flat roads, cruise control will own anyone. Its all about selective use. I'll use it at 40/45/50 on city roads when I can. I get 27mpg mixed in my legacy wagon and fueleconomy.gov says it should be doing 20 city, 22 combined, 27 highway. I'll estimate I do about 80/20 highway and city, respectively.

my civic gets 29 regardless of city or highway, but before i redid the head and tuned it a bit it would get 29 city and 34hwy. my truck gets 15.5 regardless of whether im driving 220 miles on hwy or 200 miles back and forth in town. also, the ac doesnt change it much, it was still over 15. my new (to me) legacy wagon gets a consistent 26, so far regardless of whether its city or hwy. ive had a really boring drive to coolidge everyday for the past 3 weeks to test it out too, ive done the same drive with and without the air, cruise on and off. always 26. even when i took it up to cottonwood (110 mi away) it was 26. in the city (ill run a tank over the weekend and lever leave the city) it will still be 26. mebbe im just calculating incorrectly.

FWIW when I had a Lexus IS250 AWD, I had a weekly 3 hour drive (6 round trip) from where I was working to my university to finish up school and most of this was a 2-lane 55mph highway I would get 35.X mpgs no almost every time.

I don't think it is too out of the question.

We get 24mpg combined in our IS250. It's only RWD however but that should theoretically be better in gas mileage than AWD.
