I just heard this on the radio. WTF? This is better mileage than even my Honda Fit on the highway... and it's AWD.

Sedans are easier to sculpt for wind resistance. The Fit is not. The Fit also has short gearing.
A lot of cars now have at least 6 speeds or CVT's

6 speeds are the new 4 speeds.

Still waiting for them to start making T-diesels...

In my experience even with the new CAFE testing or whatever new testing it was they came up with, I never see that kind of gas mileage. And, what's the point if you're going to have to put premium in it?

I don't understand why the manufacturers didn't push for better mileage before? If they could give you 300 hp on 37mpg highway, and advertised the crap out of it, don't you think people would pay the premium?

The Honda & Toyota are the only one you can trust with the mileage rating.

The rest are just BS marketing.

Yeah... and my new Chevy Cruze Eco gets 39 MPG highway, supposedly. I'm averaging more like 36 MPG on average.

I was actually able to pull off 42 MPG once, but did it driving 55 MPH in the slow lane with the A/C turned off. I was also drafting behind big trucks whenever I could, and accelerated like an old lady.

I also got similar mileage when I tried the same thing in my 2007 Mini Cooper.... but it's really hard to drive a sports car like that :)

When numbers look overly optimistic, they usually are.

Thats probably while doing a steady 55 mph on a flat road.

Drive like most people at 65-70 and 28-32 mpg is where you will most likely be.

My friend owns one.

This driving style in my CR-Z netted me over 45mpg! I would say the EPA estimate of 37 highway is a bit conservative. I typically see 40 in mixed driving.

The 2012 Impreza, yeah. The previous versions weren't so good on gas mileage.
I mostly drive mine in the city, though it's not really constant stop/go driving.
Let's see....per Google Maps, my daily drive is 11.5 miles one way, with 16 traffic lights and no stop signs.
There's an uninterrupted stretch of about 1 mile at 35-40mph, then later on there's 2 miles of 40-45mph.
(CVT transmission, which I rather like. Efficiency.:))
Per the trip meter, it gets 27-30mpg - it was more around 27.3 when it was cold, and was at 30-30.3 when the temperature was in the 60s and 70s a few weeks ago.

Since I got it in January, I've only really had it on the highway once though, maybe for about 7-10 miles, and it was doing around 41-42mpg there.

I might be making a trip back to my parents' place in a month or so. 350 miles, most of it on the highway.

Update: Average of the trip there and back: 36.2mpg.

Edmunds lists the 2012 Impreza at 25 city/34 hwy mpg. Remember, that's the base model... not the turbocharged WRX. The WRX is listed at 19 cty/25 hwy mpg.

Been reading more on it. Wow, the 36mpg rating is so full of bullshit it's amazing.

27mpg city and 36mpg highway. And yet everyone who's actually driving it, regardless of where, is getting 27mpg. Nice.

FWIW when I had a Lexus IS250 AWD, I had a weekly 3 hour drive (6 round trip) from where I was working to my university to finish up school and most of this was a 2-lane 55mph highway I would get 35.X mpgs no almost every time.

I don't think it is too out of the question.

My parents recently got a Mazda3 with the SkyActiv engine and they've been getting mileage that's quite close to what's advertised.

One doesn't buy a WRX to be concerned about fuel economy ;)

That said, all this thread really proves is that some cars are more sensitive to driving style than other cars. This is why many people never achieve EPA estimates while others can consistently exceed them.

^ agreed. but it doesnt hurt me to wait and see if they can deliver the same power and fun more efficiently in the next model

also hoping the interior will be a bit nicer in the next one

That's really not a bad average. I too have an Eco that does live up to its rating but I also traded in my 2006 Legacy because I could only average 23 mpg on it.
