Stupid (and now former) new employee

I miss working from home. I just did remote web administration and reporting, so it wasn't too bad. I used to sit there in my sweats and play diablo 2 in-between calls lol. Unfortunately another company bought my employer out and that was over after 2 years.

So was he doing all his work?

I don't care if someone worked 10hours a week as long as I got at least 40hours worth of work out of them.

Totally this. I know that I can't leave early, so what happens is I get all the day's work done in 3 hours then I'm sitting around waiting to die for the next 5 hours. I go around the office asking if anyone has stuff I can help with. Nobody does. Go back to my desk and nef on the forum until it's time to leave. I should be able to come in at noon. The company would get the same amount of work out of me but I would get more sleep and would be in a better mood.

Why are they requiring a Civil Engineer, who is likely an exempt employee, to actively log his hours, then fire him over that specific reason? That company is in danger of making ALL civil engineers non-exempt, and be on the hook for overtime for the past two years on every single one. Sure, he could be fired for pulling that crap, but it should have been phrased differently, mainly involving his availability for projects.

I'm in the camp of "It doesn't matter, as long as you get your work done," however, it depends on the job. Sometimes you HAVE to be in the office during normal business hours for impromptu meetings, phone calls, etc.

Sounds like they may just need less people. Be careful what you wish for.

Being fired for falsifying a timesheet is not related to exempt/non-exempt issues.

It's just that most people are remarkably bad at their jobs. I picked my career because it's something I'm good at, not because some guy told me it's what I should do.

I think a lot of people intentionally work in a slower and inefficient way. It's hard to describe what I mean so I'll give an example. Suppose I had a piece of wood and I had to put 4 nails in it and 4 screws in it and it was alternating screw-nail-screw-nail. My way is to do all of the nails at once then do all of the screws at once. I don't need to switch tools or change what I'm doing. Nail, skip a space, nail, skip a space, nail. Then do that with screws. Everyone else will put a nail, switch tools, put a screw, switch tools, put a nail, switch tools. It slows their productivity by a lot but at the same time they are always busy.
