More expensive yes, vastly more no.
If parents are thinking that the only way to take kids on vacation is to disney world then it will cost more. Try camping, most state parks cost less than $100 and if you don't want to mess with tents and stuff you can rent a camper at campgrounds for one week for what it would cost for 3 days at a resort. Or for just a bit more there are lots of low cost cabins for rent.

To be fair, some of the things that Modelworks pointed out are simple lifestyle changes which would have little to no bearing on quality of life. It's more of a question of what kind of light you paint yourself in. I see a lot of redundant and unnecessary things in that financial list. However some people think life status is about having shit. That's fine with me, but don't bitch about it.
 
I don't think it's the children that cause depression.

Western society isn't exactly condusive to healthy child rearing, I think depression can be attributed to parents trying to cope with all of the forces that go against their maternal/paternal instincts.

Here is a good example:

You have 3 kids, the only way you can support them is if both parents work fulltime. The wife/mother has to work what is essentially a double shift - a day job and her domestic job. She is constantly tired and overworked.

Now if we had a government that supported mothers, or we had a culture that was more accepting of full time homemakers (women's self esteem is often tied to their willingness to particapate in the workforce). Then we wouldnt have this problem.

In other words, it's not children that cause depression, but the opressive nature of society.

Our government already supports enough mothers who have 15 kids by 15 different baby daddies. Taxpayers dont need to support any more deadbeats, we already are supporting too many.

I like to do somewhat more interesting things with my time off than go camping in state parks.

The funny thing is that I'm not anti-having kids, but it just boggles my mind how some people can't wrap their heads around being childfree as a legitimate lifestyle choice. When I say I'm undecided they act like I'm mentally defective.

Yep. Whenever I get asked if I have kids and say no, they immediately ask when I am going to have them. I say never and they look at me like I am an alien and just say, "you will change your mind, trust me".

Yeah right, they are just saying that shit to make themselves feel better. They are miserable

If the only people who give a crap about you when you're 80 are those you've physically spawned, then you've failed at life. And THAT'S not even a guarantee they'll care about you (as millions of old people with ungrateful kids can doubtless attest).

Yeah as if having a kid is a get-out-of-nursing home card. 95% of kids these days have no qualms about stuffing their parents in an old-folks home.

"Yeah but who will take care of you when you are older?" is the worst damn excuse parents have for justifying having kids. I'm much better off using the money I save by not having kids to pay for someone to take care of me when I'm old.

I intend to find out lots of dirty secrets about people and put them in my will. That way they'll have a vested interest in keeping me alive and healthy for a looong time 🙂

Unless you make $250K+, then yea, it's all the same. You get lower taxes, you send 5 kids to public schools instead of 2, 5 kids get funding for whatever blah blah blah.

You may be in the minority if you make enough to support all your kids, but most people who have 5 kids are subsidized heavily by other tax payers.

Don't most people do this anyway, including the ones with kids? Being so old that you shit your pants isn't so bad, but it's time to get into a nursing home when you are no longer able to change your own diapers. Anyone who isn't completely retarded by this age would have something like a house and investments to start selling to pay for all of this. The nursing home my grandma lived in was about as expensive as a nice apartment (something like $1200/mo). That's a lot of money when you're 20, but it's a drop in the bucket when you're 80.

You're not defective, you just haven't really thought it through.

You can have 2 kids, and still do whatever you want to do. The 2 kids will just cost you more money. Want to go to Europe for a month? Send them to a summer camp!

Once they grow up and go to College, they are still your kids, but you don't see them for 9 months out of the year... guess what you can do during those 9 months? Anything your finances and situation allows for.

NOT having kids is the only irreplaceable thing. It's basically the same as not having a family later on in life.

It's not a good excuse, but I don't think most people have kids with the plan of having them eventually take care of you. 🙄

Sure that works as long as your rich. This really is a stupid example because you could make any scenario much better by having tons of cash.

Commited a felony and police are looking for you? Well hire the top lawyer in the country and post bond soon as you get to jail. Do some community service and pretend to be remorseful. See having money cures almost any bad situation.

In really real world people can't send their kids to a summer camp then head to Europe. Most people are like Jumpem and have to work their asses off to pay for the high costs associated with raising a child.

So to the other 99% of us regular people having kids can affect your ability to travel, buy toys, etc.
