Why can?t bible thumpers mind their own business and stop trying to convert everybody.

They even asked the principal and was told no not to do it.

They should have been kicked out for the rest of the school year, as the school could have been sued over this.

EDIT

And look whos helping in the lawsuit.

Attorneys at the Florida-based Liberty Counsel, a religious civil liberties group affiliated with the Rev. Jerry Falwell, helped draft the students' lawsuit.

Then they have the gall to use their suspension to promote their beliefs. Hell it sounds like they've taken a page out of the Liberal Handbook! The Liberals are wrong when they do that and so are these religious zealots.

The group helping is known to be with Rev. Jerry Falwell. And the religious right is a Republican side, NOT Liberal.

I'm just amazed that school allows a Bible club. Schools are moving to ban these while allowing such groups as Gay/Lesbian groups.

I would tell them to take their suspension like a man and move on however. They could have protested the principal's decision or done something else other than an action which resulted in their suspension.

If they had been passing out gay & lesbian literature there wouldn't have been any suspensions.

No sh!t Sherlock. I said they were using Liberal tactics not that they were Liberal and that it's ironic because they are followers of the "Reverend" Jerry Falwell, a well known Conservative Activist, Loon and all around Rabble Rouser.

If they were told not to pass them out they would have. Of course every Fruit in Boston would have descended upon that school like Swishes to a Broadway Show!

My only problem with this story is with kids disregarding the principle's instruction.

When principle said "NO" to their request to hand out flyers, they could have seeked

assistance from other means rather than blantly disregarding the school principle and

handing out their flyers. In that sense, they deserved punishment.

I may agree with their messages, but I don't agree with method they utilized to send

their messages.

Article I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

No mention of this concept of "separation of church and state."

I'll assume you meant religion and go on with this. In the beginning, it meant that the U.S. government shall make no laws regarding religion. This country was founded on religious freedom so it was worship as you wish. The government couldn't legally do anything about it. The founders of the country and its subsequent leaders were all religious men who did not want to see a country like England at the time where the state and the church were literally one and the same as represented by the King of England.

Unfortunately, today's "Seperation of Church and State" crowd took that line to mean that all religious references (I take that back, Christian religious messages) were to be purged from any and all government.

I don't agree that this situation with the Bible group falls under the Seperation of Church and State. This is a student led group not a school led group (such as band, choir, etc) so they should be able to do as they please in regards to religion.

The idea of seperation of church and state, while not specifically in the Constitution, is nonetheless one of the supreme laws of our country based on the Supreme Court's interpretation of it. Remember, once the Supreme Court decides something such as applying the priniciple of separation of church and state, that is law on the same level as the Constitution.

I will presume you meant establishment of religion...

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion = No state sponsored religion (ie playing favorites)
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof = An extension of the above, forbids the state from outlawing the practice of any religion

I don't have the time to write the replies I would like to write, so I'm going to drop out of this thread until I have sufficient time to reply properly.

However...

The Constitution forbids the state from sponsoring a religion, & I suppose it could potentially be interpreted the reverse direction as well (though how religion can directly control government, I do not know), but a group of students engaging in religious activity ON THEIR OWN does not violate that.

I do not support teacher led prayer, I do not believe that religion should be taught in school.

But if the students want to pray, hold meetings, talk to other people, etc. on their own time that is their business.

I would support the same rights for any religion, and even for gay/lesbian interests - As long as it is applied equally.

Like I said before, if a gay/lesbian interest group had been distributing info there would have been a massive outcry after suspensions.

This should be no different.

Remember this, as soon as you restrict someone else's freedom you are one step closer to losing your own. I may not agree with other religions, and I certainly don't care for gay/lesbian interest groups - But they have every right to group & be heard...

As do I.
