For the second time this year, Florida Atlantic University is making the news for the strange behavior of a professor.
A junior at the university’s Davie campus says his professor threw him out of a course for refusing to “stomp on Jesus.”
Ryan Rotela, of Coral Springs, told CBS12 in West Palm Beach that three weeks ago, the instructor in his Intercultural Communications class asked everyone in the class to take out a sheet of paper, write “Jesus” in bold letters and put the piece of paper on the floor.
The instructor, Deandre Poole, then told the class to stomp on the papers.
Rotela refused, and told Poole he was offended by the instruction.
"Anytime you stomp on something it shows that you believe that something has no value. So if you were to stomp on the word Jesus, it says that the word has no value," Rotela told CBS12.
Rotela, who describes himself as a devout Mormon, went to Poole’s supervisor two days later to discuss the incident. He was suspended from the class since the incident.
FAU e-mailed a statement to CBS12 to the effect that sensitive topics are often breached during open discourse, but that a university is the appropriate venue for those discussions. The university would not say if Poole will face disciplinary action for suspending Rotela.
FAU did not immediately respond to The Miami Herald’s request for comment.
Another FAU professor came under fire for telling the Sun Sentinel in January that the Newtown, Conn., massacre of 26 children and adults at an elementary school may not have happened.
Professor James Tracy later claimed he was misunderstood, saying he felt the story of the massacre had been maneuvered by the government and news media into a handy example of a national need for gun control.

A university student was suspended from his class after he refused to stomp on a piece of paper with the words Jesus on it. Rotela refused saying that it was inappropriate and went to the professors supervisor and later was suspended.

What the professor did was unacceptable and he should be suspended or fired for this. The student should never have been suspended and must be reinstated immediately.

What do you think should happen to the professor? Should the student be reinstated?

We will never hear the other side of this story because of the privacy laws that protect the student. No surprise that the student is the one framing the incident with his perspective.

What reason does the student have to lie?

For the same reason there was a thread a while back about a female student suing a University because she failed one of her Management courses. She was going for her Masters in something stupid. She got a C in the class, but contended that the teacher had it out for her. She sued because she said the C ruined her job prospects.

Of course...the teacher can't actually say why she got a C in the class as she isn't allowed to disclose student information.

What reason does the student have to lie?

The student need not lie, merely omit some of the truth. He could be trying to extract money from the university, extract money from a sympathetic source, seeking attention, getting back at the professor for some perceived slight (real or imaginary), etc...

Key line in article (emphasis added):
FAU e-mailed a statement to CBS12 to the effect that sensitive topics are often breached during open discourse, but that a university is the appropriate venue for those discussions.
Student is unbalanced and belongs in Bible College.

Is this for real? We actually have universities in the United States where it's believed that having students stomp on a piece of paper will somehow prepare them for the adult world?

LULZ!

No wonder so many adults can barely function at a grade-school level.

I think you just discovered one of the deepest secrets of the universe. Deep in the sense of how far in your head had to be to see it.

The course is on intercultural communications.

I imagine this student's reaction was not expected by the Professor, but I imagine the discussion after would have touched on incidents like the Mohammed-Cartoon/Death-threat connection.

A monumental conservative intellect.

If the idea is to foster open discussion, how does stomping on a piece of paper help to achieve that? Explain it for me. When you want to discuss a touchy subject with someone, do you engage them by asking them to stomp on paper?

LOL.

the idea is that most will hesitate, then you discuss those who did and those who didn't and why, to highlight the importance of symbols in culture.

So if I write something like 'Obama' or 'black people' or 'hot gay sex' on a piece of paper and ask you to stomp on it, do you honestly believe we can have a fruitful discussion about those subjects following either your objection or acceptance?

Based on what, exactly? Walk me through it.

the goal is to have the individual examine their hesitation and the reasons why they hesitate. Jesus is much more universal a word with historical symbolism than Obama or the words gay sex.

if you want to walk through it sign up for the class. if you want to argue the validity of such a lesson be my guest i'm not sure what the overall value is frankly.

More liberal assholes that act surprised every time someone with a backbone tells them to fuck off. Progressives just seem to think that everyone should bow down and kiss the ass of the authorities.

It was a long time ago when the left questioned authority, what the hell happened to them?

The student wasn't offended by 'stomping on paper'.

You're beating yourself here...
