"Immigrants have no "right" to be here, they are here because WE ALLOW THEM TO BE GUESTS in our country. If they commit ANY crimes, if they get a parking ticket, we can and we should deport their ass back to whatever hole in the ground they came from." -- TScenter
Besides the fact that this is simply a long-standing principle of US law WRT immigration status, immigrants HAVE no "right" to be here.

Did you just fall off the turnip truck yesterday or something?

The kid is definitely stupid. I did not even get a fake ID in college because I wasn't a citizen, and I wanted to be on my best behavior and not risk getting deported.
You can't imagine how much it sucks to graduate magna cum laude from ivy league school at age 20 and not be able to have a drink with your friends at a bar.
But you cannot geopardize your citizenship prospects by breaking the law for no reason. Not that I would break the law now that I have my citizenship.
All I was saying is that I think the guy was singled out because he was Russian immigrant, young, and not lawyered up like an older US citizen would be, making him much more vulnerable. Prosecutors are scum like other lawyers. All they care about is that extra notch. A win at all cost. I hope that guy settles for a misdemenor (no deportation) and that is that. Prosecutor gets his "win", the guy serves some jail or probation time, learns his lesson and that is that.

What are you kidding? There are TONS of immigration lawyers who provide legal services to immigrants pro bono. Now that the guy got some national attention, the phone in his cell should be ringing off the hook (figuratively).

the point is he is a Russian immigrant, which means
A. jury members might stereotype him as a spy.
B. Most important. He has the extra threat of deportation hanging over him, which means he is more likely to plea bargain for some misdemenor conviction to avoid the risk of deportation. Just gives extra advantage to the prosecutor.

=X I have nothing to say about this issue.. because I have to go surf 200+ channels now (including all those naughty channels).

I have to say this...Kasparov, you are a dumbass. For several reasons.
1) HE IS 19. He isn't some little kid. He fully knew what he was doing, and what the risks were.
2) How can you justify what he did as ok? He STOLE private information, and then publicly displayed it. Don't give me that BS about how its a public company....just because a company has stocks doesn't mean they don't own anything.
3) THe price of cable/satellite also does NOT justify what he did. You want competition? Start your own damn company. Stealing is only gonna drive the prices higher, jackass.
4) Don't even bother saying this crime shouldn't put him in jail with rapists. For one thing, you don't know if he will get jailtime or not. And if he does, how is he being lumped with rapists? They will be in there many, many years, he will not.
5) You get so upset when people mention that he is russian. Going by your name, I'd say you are Russian as well. Maybe, just maybe, you are so strongly for this guy because you are both Russian? Ever occur to you that you wouldn't give a rats ass were he not?

The guy broke the law, he pays the price. End of story.

Are all diamond members idiots? You and Tscenter both are.

Ok, so I insulted you. You deserved it. But, if you cared to read, my above post is laced with points that discredit you. Now, would you like to counter my valid points? Or are you just gonna call me an idiot, because you have nothing to say?

Is this obviously not rascist (or at the very least anti-immigrant)?

How would Russian authorities react if an American exchange student were to do a similar thing?

He is not an exchange student, he is at least a legal resident since he was allowed to work in a law firm. THat means he is as much of a guest here as a renowned russo-phob tcsenter. Now if he were an exchange student here, he would never be allowed to work in the US.
Such situation would not exist in Russia simply because there is virtually NO immigration to russia from western states for obvious reasons.

Daako -- youre right, everyone but Kasparov says that this guy is guilty. But for reasons of his own, tcsenter escalated this issue into some sort of anti-immigrant booly-hoo.

ANd your point is? If you would skip 1 day of paranoia pills, you would realize that since the kid was allowed to work in a legal firm he was not an illegal immigrant, he was not an immigrant with some shady status. He was a legal resident of United States. That means that he had the same rights that your dumb ass has with a few exception(voting, for example).

Sorry pal, I ask again, did you just fall off the turnip or borscht truck?

An exchange student living in the US RESIDES HERE LEGALLY you dumb ass. They may also get work VISAs.

If he were a US citizen, they would have never referred to him as "a 19 year-old Russian student", unless of course he were majoring RUSSIAN STUDIES, which I doubt. No newspaper identifies criminal suspects by their major in college, or their nationality, UNLESS they are NOT A CITIZEN. If he were a US citizen, it would simply have been written "a 19 year-old student".

And so far you're the only one who thinks that having no sympathy for criminals that break the law makes me anti-immigrant. I don't care, because I think you're an idiot.

Oh, hey, and a racist. Wow, I haven't been called racist for a couple weeks, I think I'm losing my touch!

Read the article buddy:

Serebryany obtained the documents while working part-time at a law firm in California that performed legal work for DirecTV. Serebryany attends college in Chicago but his family lives in Los Angeles.

The guy was NOT an EXCHANGE STUDENT, the guy was NOT an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT. he WAS A LEGAL RESIDENT of US and as such has as many rights as your DUMB ASS(with few exceptions).

And you trully believe that the American media would not jump on this and create scandalous headlines if the guy was a US Citizen even though he has a name like "Igor Serebryanny"? If the US Citizen by name of "Mohhamad Atta" published DirectTV secrets, how many newspapers and other media outlets would have headlines like "FBI arrests SAUDI accused of stealing directv secrets" before they would actually admit that he was a US citizen.

I hope youre intelligent enough that you take the headlines in newspapers with a grain of salt. THey are in business of selling(advertisement) and the more scandalous the headlines are, the more sales they will get.

And so far you're the only one who thinks that having no sympathy for criminals that break the law makes me anti-immigrant. I don't care, because I think you're an idiot.

Youre views are purely anti-immigrant. If you read my earlier comments, you can see that I had(and still have) no sympathy for this criminal. You however had to pull the immigrant cards even though it appears you didnt read the article carefully enough. For that, youre an idiot.

I dont know if youre racist, because i havent read youre views on that issue(not that I care), but your views of legal immigrants in this country are obscene. Is that because they steal your jobs?

It probably wouldn't matter this late in the game, but:

CNN's / AP coverage of the story

It says a little different about how he went about getting the documents (e.g. worked for a contractor of the law firm, not the law firm itself, etc.). But after reading the articles and this thread, I'm inclined to say that he knew exactly what he was doing. Com'on, UChicago student just happens to grab some sensitive trade documents, distributes to some appropriate websites, and claims he just wanted to help the hacking community.

A. jury members might stereotype him as a spy.
B. Most important. He has the extra threat of deportation hanging over him, which means he is more likely to plea bargain for some misdemenor conviction to avoid the risk of deportation. Just gives extra advantage to the prosecutor.
As for playing off of some old Cold War sentiments, give it a rest. If a Chinese, Korean, Iraqi, etc. student did the same thing, you probably wouldn't be complaining about the "unfair" nationality bias, would you? "Stand by my brothers but ignore the others" (or whatever that old saying is). I don't think this guy's being singled out for his nationality, citizen or not.

youre right. I dont think he will be treated differently just because he's Russian.
I am upset however with TCSenters views, but hey, its a free country. I'll get over it

but hey, notice how CNN's article has no mentioning of Russian nationality or citizenship status. THe guy is a US citizen and that proves my point... The other newspaper was definitely looking for readers such as TCSenter looking to fuel their cold war mentality....
