does such a thing exist? I was wondering if there was something cheaper than going the atom or x-bow route

Like it in what way? Ultra-light, ridiculous performance? Or just some sort of 2 seater that is either a kit or custom?

ultra-light, ridiculous performance. will probably track, but not liking the idea of buying a trailer for something like that

I'm into vehicles with 4 wheels at the moment

How 'bout we meet in the middle and you get a trike?

Don't laugh, but you can make a VW based "dune buggy" that will positively roxor your soxors. Build one for the street, It should come in well under 1800 LB. That is no 506 KG Caterham, but you could build a set of 4 and have your own races with friends for the same coin 😛
The aircooleds can make upwards of 250 HP if you have the money to do it.

Here you go: http://www.palatov.com/cars/dp4.html

Just what you're looking for. The builder has four levels from the 200hp DP4 to the DP1 with 2lb/hp. They all weigh around 800-1200lbs and can be easily made street legal from what I read on the site (maybe even sold street-legal?). Click on the "Cars" tab on the left for all the specs and pricing. Videos are under the "Gallery" tab.

From the link: there are no streetable options offered.

The DP1 is incredible. With just the engine coming in at $27,700 I can imagine the DP1 as a complete package will be very expensive.

I think anything you make yourself can be dubbed a "kit car" and then register it. There are a million variations on this type of kit car which aren't insanely expensive, but definitely not for the faint of heart. These guys offer a "ready to drive" option with an LS1 for $36k, in a car that weighs 1500lbs.

That R500 definitely isn't street legal. Practically no windsheild/windscreen. Other Caterhams are though. Of course there's also Lotus cars but comapred to Caterhams they've heavyweights.

I'm pretty sure it'd be legal in my state. Some neighbors of mine built a little dunebuggy type thing they drove around town in. I assume it was legal because they had a license plate for it.

That is because it used to be a VW.
