I read this article about how the internet is allowing people to get free music and movies illegally and such piracy is killing the respective industries. Bullshit! We've all downloaded loads of pirated free porn and the porn industry is booming!

Is Anandtech going to go offline today along with the thousands of other websites to support the anti-SOPA movement?

Don't bitch unless you contact your Congress critters. It's more important than voting in our society these days and before you ask I did.

I'm seeing a comforting sign - my representative and my junior senator's pages are both loading very slowly, as if they're getting overloaded.

Email away to the senior senator, and Obama.

And everyone, when you're writing in, you may want to make mention of preventing riders on later bills, or the return of these things as slightly different forms with more obscure names.

My fear is that they'll keep trying to ram this down our throats in more subtle ways until the big corporations get what they want. The Internet has been the most formidable threat to them. Remember what happened to Bank of America last year when they tried to enact that silly fee?

It'll probably get tacked onto an appropriations bill later.

Does anyone else think this issue isn't nearly as black and white as it's made out to be? Copyrights are an important part of our economic system and they need to be enforced to be meaningful.

I think the wikipedia statement is very reasonable but many of the of the other sites like craigslist are just posting ridiculous anti-capitalist nonsense. SOPA does appear to be overaggressive and a bad piece of legislation and but seems a lot of people believe that copyrights shouldn't apply at all on the internet.

No, copyrights have become a joke. They are essentially neverending. Every time Disney asks for a copyright extension it gets one.

Also, copyright is a civil issue, not a criminal one. Corporations are attempting to foist the costs of protecting their eternal copyright on society at large.

Fuck that.

As Boberfett said Disney's copyright on Mickey and Co. should've ended a long while ago.

I do feel that they should continue for a reasonable (50?) number of years after the death of the creator so that if a person gets lucky their creation can provide some support for any offspring.

As for whether Barack Obama deserves credit the to death of SOPA or PIPA?

As long as corporations and owner's (looking at you Mr. Murdoch) of corporations are for those types of regulations they're not dead yet.

Although Obama does deserve credit for listening to the concerns of the tech company CEO's that he recently hobnobbed with.

lol this coming from someone in Indonesia? Please. You couldnt possibly be ignorant to your country's censorship of movies, books, and media, could you? And Lord help you if youre caught writing inflammatory things about your government online. Your penal code specifically says you could face 6 years in jail for doing so. Your president passed legislation that requires any films being produced in country scripts must be given to commitee for approval.

Ive been to Indo a few times. It is certainly no pillar of freedom for its people.

Actually copyright violations can be a crime. I think the criminal copyright statute was passed in the 1970's, but I can't give you the exact year because wiki is down today. :)

You're not alone in this opinion. Many on the internet seem to want a piracy free-for-all. SOPA does overreach and needs to be pruned back but without copyright protection, available content will suffer.
