You're absolutely right - congress knows very well how to waste time and money.

I think he's one of a very few very smart people who could have turned the opportunity to speak to congress into something more.

He certainly didn't do anything to improve the time-wasting happening in the room.

This, this, and even more this.

He is a very intelligent guy who could have created very strong testimony to further his cause (whatever side he is on). Instead he spend 4:15 cracking jokes, which were funny but not suitable for a congressional hearing, and 15 seconds making a point that we should give immigrant workers visas and about wanting Americans to pick it for other immigrants to do work in other parts of the production line. I was extremely excited about him going to that hearing, hoping for some very insightful commentary that would help further the issue. Instead he used it as a continuation of his show. He lost a little of my respect by doing what he did.

Sorry, but that goes in the wrong call folder. I would have much preferred something like "The Word" segment if he was going to pull stuff from his show.

Only on farms <= 500 man days of work. Assuming 250 work days a year (M-F * 50 weeks), that's on farms that employ 2 people full-time.

Edit: Didn't read it fully. That's per quarter... so 8 people full time. :p
You're assuming farms work all-year.

52 weeks / 4 quarters = 13 weeks / quarter

13 weeks / quarter x 5 work days / week = 65 days / quarter

Its unclear what they mean by 500 man days, but if we assume it means 8 hours / day / man, but either way, if you employ 65 workers for 8 hours / day, then you will reach 500 man days of work. If the definition of man days is 24 hours of work, then multiply 65 by 3 (assuming 8 hours / man). Farm workers don't get OT so they can work beyond the 8 hours.

The word wouldnt have worked unless he put a screen up behind him.

And the fact that people are discussing his comments means that his "inappropriate" jokes had the intended effect. They weren't as funny as they are on his show, but his commentary was laced with very effective sarcasm about the ridiculous stances being taken on this issue.

wonder how many Americans would be working on farms if their welfare and endless unemployment benefits were cut off.

For people that don't get the subtlety, this country was founded and built by immigrants. To be against immigration is un-American.

i have nothing against immigrants. but if you break our laws, you do not deserve to be in this country. most *LEGAL* immigrants are *anti-illegal immigration* because they didn't jump the line.

this is a country of laws. we need to enforce ALL OF THEM.

and what exactly did congress expect from a comedian? and why the hell would they let elmo testify? christ....

75% of the fucks on perpetual welfare don't know how to take care of themselves, so I doubt they will. The rest would probably do it (if they could) as they paid into the system their whole life working a job that laid them off or had some medical issue... The 25% that uses the system temporarily to get back on their feet while actively out searching for jobs is why I don't at all favor the dismantling of the welfare system. Everyone has some tough times, and those advocating the removal of welfare are either a) spoiled rotten and were handed everything in their lives anyway or b) fortunate enough to not have had a tragedy early in their lives and are thus set with savings.

They are also anti-illegal immigration because illegal immigration is making it hard for them to get decent wages.

Apples and oranges. They should deport the companies and people who hire the illegals though.

"we need to enforce all laws" was his quote. Seems to me like he was advocating a police state.

And no, we shouldn't. Your food prices would skyrocket. This is what you people don't get-- illegal immigrant productivity FAR OUTWEIGHS their cost. If you were a business owner and had someone on your payroll that outproduces 2/3rds of your employees but costs you 1/3 of their wages, would he be the first person you fire??

That's like saying "we shouldn't free slaves because our cotton prices would skyrocket."

You need to either kick the illegals out (which I support) or give them rights, but not necessarily citizenship, so they can't be exploited by the farmers, which is practically what the guest worker program is.

We are against ILLEGAL immigration. Nice try to mix it up.

LEGAL = good, ILLEGAL = bad.

i'm not advocating big brother being everywhere. i'm advocating that we enforce law where there should be no question to the (il)legality. people are crossing our borders. that makes them illegal immigrants. they do not belong here. stop them from entering - protect the border, heavily fine businesses found to employ illegal immigrants, and deport illegal immigrants.

going back to your speeding example - if i'm stopped by an officer for speeding, he gives me a ticket with either a warning or a fine. either way, he is enforcing the law.

Bullshit. I have never heard anybody in real life or on any forum say they were against LEGAL immigration. Most illegal lovers use that as an excuse to throw out the bigot/racist card.
Really? Really? I've met people in real life who not only wanted no legal immigration, they wanted no foreign tourists, no foreigners allowed in the U.S. period. I've met people who wanted to ship all non-whites back to where ever the hell in Nonwhitistan they came from. Hell, there are people like that in my own extended family. "Put 'em all on boat and ship 'em back to <Africa/China/Mexico/Ragheadistan (yes, they did say boat to Mexico)>." Bigots really do exist and there are shitload of them.

Not many are against LEGAL immigration, it's the ILLEGAL immigration that ticks most folks off. Of course, it's obvious that the media and the libs have gotten to you, because you make no distinction in your statement.

Yes, lets issue guest worker visas. I would love to have 20 million Mexicans come to America and work for minimum wage.
What could go wrong?

It's not at all "like that." Slaves were brought over against their will... last I checked, Mexicans were willing to risk life, limb, and imprisonment to sneak over to work here. They're WILLING to do the work.
