However, I figured it was easier to track who is posting what when each there are a million posts embedded within one another due to repeated quoting.

It's lame, I agree. A lot of people just put their user name down in hopes that they will become "well known" on atot forums.

Furthermore, a lot of ppl try to come up with unique ways of writing their username, again, in hopes that people will recognize them or whatnot. However in reality, they just look like douchebags.
