Newb Question-

I'm at work so I can't access any real gaming sites for information. But I just bought the game last night- Does completing single player missions effect abilities in Multiplayer at all?

I.E unit unlocks or Research Points?

Single player doesn't effect multi-player in any way other than unique bnet portraits are unlocked by doing certain achievements.

I'm noticing more and more custom maps/ games, anyone recmend a good one yet?

I've watched a few replays of games played on Infernal Arena and it looks pretty fun but I haven't checked it out yet. It's a big map that is used for 3v3 games but it turns out more like 3 1v1 games due to map layout unless your allies have good communication and can assist.

Okay, I freaking love this game!

My handle is JMaximus

yay more players, however you need to post you id# s well for us to be able to add you. It's the number that shows up when you hover the mouse over your portrait in the main bnet page(inside the game)

Nope, it froze 2x in beta, and BSOD 1x in official release.

Never got a chance to see an error report.

when does it happen? is it random? Just wondering if maybe it's related to that bug where the graphics card can go nuts in the blizzard menus due to not having the frame rate capped.

My game freezes completely randomly... sometimes it might do it when loading and sometimes in the middle of a game.

Oh, I don't think it is related to the gfx problem.

I've monitored my GPU temp while playing SC2 and it never gets hotter than 65C-ish, even in the menu.

It's just random. IIRC, one time was in the middle of a quick match, another was in the menu. Seems random from what I can tell.

But again, it's such a small % of crashes that I don't really think too much of it, but figured I'd find out if others noticed anythign similar.

Absolutely this. To maximize the resources gained you need 3 SCV's per mineral patch, but there are diminishing returns after 2 per. Anything over 3 and you're wasting minerals/supply. So the 8 extra you build to send to the expansion don't go wasted in the time they are still mining at the main.

A lot of people prefer 3x per mineral patch, period (not just pre-expanding). In most professional games you'll see huge worker counts.

I have watched dozens of SC2 professional videos over the past week I haven't seen a video yet where they did not harass. These guys are always up in each others bases harassing after 2 minutes.

It seems pretty darn productive to me. While your workers are all mining at full capacity early game, your opponents workers are dropping dead or being forced off the mineral line to fight/flee from your attack. Just 30 seconds of this and you are well ahead economically already.

A lot of the harassment you see requires a very high APM to execute. If you're not above a certain "critical mass" then attempting some of the harassment you see the professionals do will actually hurt your game.

Inexperienced players (probably most of the people in the thread) should be focused on a strong macro-based game. You can get into Diamond without any micro only following two rules: 1. Keep building workers, 2. Keep your money low.

Sigh....I'm so sick of losing. I think its 8 in a row now? I need to get out of this platinum league ASAP, but its just not fun to lose over and over while I sloooowly make my way down out of a league i never should have placed into.

In the beta wasnt it 10 games? 5 games against random opponents simply isnt enough, since theres always the luck factor.

IMO you shouldnt start out at anything too high, no more than gold based on the placements - if youre that good, youll crush the competition and then they should let you into platinum and higher within 5-10 more games.

I horribly suck. Tried playing against AI 2v2 on medium. Got raped twice. They always got a ton of more powerful units out quicker than me or my AI companion. Guess I just need more practice.

normal + being able to use the crystal power more than once should make the level a breeze.

If Kerrigan is giving you trouble, u can try:

1. BCs and yamato her to death (have like 12 BCs ready to fire the Y cannon)
2. Use Thors - barrage can stun her
3. Use mass marines / reapers

Kerrigan has that shield thing where it reduces dmg to a fixed amount, but small/light dmg units can still put out a lot more dmg than big dmg units.

Use Mind control towers on the air units if you have that upgrade. On hard mode, I ended up MCing tons of mutas/broodlords.

Beat all 27 challenges. Yah! Easiest achievement points ever. :) I did have to look at some videos for some of them though.

Ugh.

Everytime I lose, it's from stupid shit like 6pool with zealot support.

It's because I'm playing team games, and the cheese just gets overwhelming.

The last game I lost was a 2v2. One guy photon cannon pushed in the very beginning. He actually didn't get any cannons up, but I had to pull almost all my probes off to stop it. Then, the second guy comes in with Reapers, which I barely manage to stop with a couple stalkers, losing a good deal of probes in the process. Right when I stop that, in comes the first guy again with the dark templar. I have to scramble to get observers up, and by the time I stop the DTs all my probes are dead, I have 6 units, and second guy is knocking on my door with MM (which rapes gateway protoss units anyway).

I know that if I was better, I could have countered this, but this style of play is so unfun that it really ruins my mood.

If it was 1v1 it would be really easy to counter. For example I could have quickly pushes the photon cannon guy, since he lost a lot of resources trying to cannon push.

But with team games, everyone just layers the cheese on me like I'm a nacho.

what did you teammate do?

if he concentrated on unit production early he could wipe out 1 opponent while they are concentrating their cheese on you.

Okay so my BFG 9600GT 1GB card is just not cutting it.

I'm currently sitting on a 4200+ dual core processor, 4gigs of ram and the 9600GT card, samsung spinpoint f3 500gb hdd.

I'm starting to think the 9600GT card is limiting my game play as when I play 4v4's my FPS drops to around 15-19frames per second.

Is this my problem? If so what is the next noticeable step for better game play?

First reduce your settings to find out what the limiting factor is. The game requires a bit of CPU too. So lower the settings that use CPU and see if it helps. If not, then lower settings that use GPU. Also you can check CPU usage to know if it is limiting you.

Which settings use the most CPU?

I have sucked and will always suck at RTS games so I don't want to buy SC2, but I just built a new rig and would like to check out how SC2 looks on it. So if anyone has a spare guest pass it would be appreciated.

I

Are you fighting against air or ground?
ground nydus worms. i finally beat it.
I basically walled in all my entrances w/ engineering bays, supply depots and armories, then put a layer of perdition turrets and a bunker up asap w/ siege tanks all over the place. i had 2 squadrons of banshees running around the map taking ou the nydus worms as they pop up, and a bunch of battlecruisers at the base to support the ground forces. kerrigan would come and mess all my stuff up though, but i'd always have literally 10 scvs sitting around near the entrances repairing or rebuilding stuff. also had 2 or 3 mind control towers at each entrance to mind control ultralisks.

i also tried to unlock the secret mission after beating the campaign, but it never showed up on my mission list. i thought the latest patch would fix that. i'm going to try and load the mission from a save file and try it from there. hopefully it counts toward my total complete status
