I'm going to go in, turn off my brain, and enjoy the mindless action flick. Star Wars now is just pretty colors and explosions.

I had really hoped that they had learned from Marvel how to handle a cinematic universe. Instead we get a Mad-Lib director trilogy that makes almost no sense as a part of the larger story.

I try to do that, but it's just the Muppets after Jim Henson died. They all just started talking and acting "off"...

I read the leaks about the story of the movie... lets just put it this way, Star Wars as a franchise is hard to kill but Disney is doing their best. Kind of makes you long for the prequels.

I am 49 years old. In 1977, I remember seeing the ads on TV for Star Wars and begged my dad to take me. I remember seeing it for the first time and I was blown away and completely hooked. I loved The Empire Strikes Back and loved much of (but not all) of Return of the Jedi. Lucas slipped up with the prequels, but the underlying story arch was actually quite good but botched by bad dialog and some poor decisions (such as Jar Jar).

When I saw Force Awakens, I thought it was decent. Not great, but decent, even though I thought it was pretty much a rehash of Episode 4 and I thought the characters were boring and bland (outside of Finn). The Last Jedi was one of the worst movies I've ever seen and when I debate the worst SW movie, it always comes down to Attack of the Clones and The Last Jedi. I'd have to give The Last Jedi the edge, because it has ZERO redeeming qualities whereas AotC does have a few.

With all of that being said, there is absolutely zero chance of me seeing Rise of Skywalker this weekend. I've read all the leaks and if they're confirmed true by those who do go and see it, I will never set foot in a theater to see it and will not buy the media or allow it on my Plex server. IF the leaks are true, not only will this be the worst Star Wars movie by a comfortable margin, but it will wreck the franchise.

140 critic reviews as of this morning.
Its pleasant viewing, but a far cry from the inspired Star Wars we know and love. Also the weakest entry of the current trilogy. And since I didnt love the first two entries with all my heart, I think I will skip the theater for this one, and wait for home video.

Return of the Jedi was the first Star Wars movie with compromise in it...and it shows. The Ewoks were supposed to be Wookies---which would have made 10000x more sense. They couldn't get enough actors to play Wookies though, but Ewok-sized actors were everywhere, so there you go. The story had to be rewritten around killer teddy-bears and silliness ensued. The fact it was the last movie let Lucas get away with it at the time.

I'm glad they compromised, otherwise we wouldn't have gotten this:

Shit. Now I have to see that remade! That would have been epic!

Early versions of the script had Wookies tearing the arms off of Stormtroopers (ala the mention in New Hope), and it was set to be pretty violent. I always thought a Wookie series like Mandalorian would have been a great show idea.

I read that it currently sits ranked as the second worst Star Wars film ever on both Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes. I won’t listen to any of the mainstream critics, as they were the asshats who gushed about Last Jedi and I think my 10 year-old nephew could’ve written a better movie.

I'm curious if Kylo is actually going to be menacing for any portion of this movie. Vader makes him look like a pubescent Mr Rogers.

This whole trilogy feels like it was created by a committee that prefers bland consensus over ingenuity. The prequel trilogy felt like it was created by a disconnected loon with way too much money, and I honestly think I prefer that trilogy over this one.

Interesting because many of the negative reviews directly reference his contribution as the main underlying problem.

I've read a few non-spoiler reviews and I'm not picking that up. My suspicion is that some people are inclined to explain shortcomings in this movie as the fault of TLJ regardless of what JJ has decided to do here. Axes must be ground.

Kylo never worked as a villain- he's not threatening, kinda whiny, and comes off a more of a depressed emo kid than a terrifying powerful person.

The reviews coming in are interesting.

It seems that the movie critic community is punishing Rise of Skywalker’s shift back to fan service, as if to validate their gushing over TLJ.

It seems that TLJ painted JJ into a corner he was unable to escape in a way pleasing to OT fans, so they’re not happy either.

I am just glad I got to experience ESB through the eyes of a 5 year old and can now wrap myself in the warm comfort of the next Mandolorian episode.

I won't know until I see it, but there's one that says "a slap in the face to Rian Johnson", and a few others that reference retcons... So who knows?

Personally I dislike TFA about as much as TLJ so I don't care who we blame!

I will never understand how Disney can own the company that spins 23 movies together almost flawlessly and then go on to do this to Star Wars. Hell, just finding one nerd to be appointed master of all lore would have done wonders for continuity.

Personally I really dislike TFA and think TLJ is a joke. But one of my 6 year old daughters loves TFA and is really excited for this one so I will go. But I am going to make her sit down and watch the originals first.

from what I understand:
marvel did so well story wise because there was one master of Lore over marvel movies!
he came with the purchase of Marvel. Disney never got rid of him and left him alone.

Yeah, previously Lucas was the master I suppose. I am just really saddened by these movie and what could have been.

I suspect that this movie will be hamstrung by trying to fix everything Rian Johnson screwed up, and doing it badly.

In terms of pure storytelling the prequels were actually slightly better.

In terms of dialog, sound, visuals, directing, cinematography, and just about everything else I can think of, they are far worse.

Darn, I have a bad feeling about this movie. You would think with all the $millions they spend that the story would be epic.
Waiting 2 years for this and then WTF are they thinking? I'm already prepared to be disappointed.

Got my ticket. As far as work is concerned I have an offsite meeting Friday morning. Good or bad I’m ready for some pew pew pew Star Wars time — 40+ yrs in the making.
