<< what's even lamer is that it will suck at these 19 digital theaters. THe DLP projectors they use produce a ton of artifacts, can't handle a camera pan without breaking up, and don't know the meaning of the word black either. >>

I seriously doubt that Lucas, one of the greatest directors of our time, who specializes in visual and audio quality, would film a Star Wars movie in digital if it looked worse than film. This is a man who has to personally approve every theater before they can show a Star Wars film. The only reason he's doing this is because it looks better. Every review I've ever read about digital theaters just raves about them. You are the first person I've ever heard to criticize it. My assumption is that you aren't one of the lucky ones to have a digital theater nearby, so you criticize it to lessen the blow.

Why do people say that? I admit his CGI is a bit overboard, but where is the bad storyline? Anyone who grew up with the original Star Wars should love this storyline. Granted, Phantom Menace was more of the set up for the rest of the story. But Attack of the Clones looks to be where the plot begins to thicken. It's neat to see a story unfold, based on things Luke and Obi-Wan merely mentioned 25 years ago. The line in Star Wars where Luke asks, "My father fought in the clone wars?" takes on new meaning after this movie.

I guess for those born after 1980, these movies don't have the same effect. I think it's one of the most interesting stories written in our lifetime.

<< Do you have a digital theater near you?

In a Theater Far, Far Away ...

When he began shooting Star Wars Episode II in an all-digital format, George Lucas imagined that Attack of the Clones could screen in 2,000 digital-projection theaters nationwide. Oh, well. As of the May 16 opening, only 19 screens had the equipment required to do so. Here's where to find them.

I seen this too, mentioned to my buddy when we went to Valley View to see Changing Lanes a couple weeks ago. Guess I know where I'll go to see it!

Just not the first month or so it's open, gotta avoid the whack jobs who are already in line.

the theatre companies completely rebuilt to support stadium seating and high quality sound, and revenues didn't rise. they're not gonna put in digital projectors. the distributors are going to have to foot that bill.

I know where I'll be going. :D:D

And for all you people who say Episode II is going to suck as bad as Ep. I, you are terribly wrong. I still have hope in Lucas, and when you really think about it, Episode I wasn't that bad, really. Bad for a Star Wars caliber movie, but better than a large majority of the crap that comes out of the theaters today.

bah, until digital projectors advance a little more its not good for consumers. last i checked current digital projectors don't have higher or even equivalent resolution to film. no need to jump the gun, they'll get there eventually. which is sad when there are 70mm and expanded 35mm film formats with even higher resolution(the expanded 35mm ver has better fps and resolution-i forgot the name). i want more resolution damnit! if upgrades are in order it better be for something more then scratch removal and to save the corporations money.

i for one don't want to pay to watch a giant projection tv:p

got that wrong man...at least in my case. i'm a *dedicated* starwars fan at the age of 15 (1987). i also understand why most people didn't like episode 1 and that's because they thought of it as "just another movie" if you know what i mean.

There's 4 around me who will be showing it digitally.

I guess they didn't make their 3000 screen goal. :)

<< I'll be going in Barrington, IL. :) >>

I don't live to far from that theater either. If I can be sure I can get a ticket for the theater with the DLP projector then I'll head out there otherwise I'll probably just go to the AMC 30 next to my house, Barrington 30's twin: Cantera 30.

If they only have one theater using DLP, it would probably be impossible to get in there in the first week.

No digi theaters in Indiana, but I might make a road trip to IL or OH. I think it would be cool to compare seeing film vs. digital projection. I've read that people who were allowed to see film and the digital projectin of Episode 1 prefered the film projection. According to them the digital projection had more detail, and was sharper/crisper, but it was too sharp (they prefered the "softer" look of film). And that's a trade mark of video in general. We are so used to the "film look" that even things that "better" (in regards to picture quality) look worse (we find less pleaseing to look at).

For a studio (or in this case Lucas) to achieve "film quality" while keeping the movie all digital (from shooting to projecting) is not a problem. But making sure the all digital movie retains the "film look" that we expect to see at movie theaters is the rough part. But, one of two things is gonna happen. We are either going to get used to the higher detail/sharper digitally projected image, or filmmakers are going to "soften" the digital projection so it looks more like traditional film.

It's not just that it's less pleaseing to look at, video has a stigma along with it as well. Anything shot on video automatically loses a lot of production value. When people see video, they think of TV sit-coms and soap operas.
