Champions Online was actually fun for a while....

Yep, I agree. It was fun - for about a month. (Which incidentally was about how long I played it even having bought a 6 month subscription.)

I bought this game on the back of your criticisms of the game. From what you said about the game itself I expected to get about a months play out of it and I cannot say I am disappointed with how it has all panned out.

I bought the game based on good information and my expectations of the game have been met. Happy customer :)

At least you went in... you know... Shaka! His eyes open wide!

Let me complain about having bought the game....oh wait I like it.

Glad you do. In fact, I to liked the game while I was playing it. I found the storyline was pretty cool, and every time I hit those few and far between storyline missions it was like opening a new chapter in a book. Unfortunately, as I said - it all came down to whether it was worth it. For all the reasons I've put forth several times in this thread, I could justify it as a one-time-purchase fee, but not with a subscription fee plus microtransactions on top of it.

I don't believe I've ever said it's outright bad. Just lacking in many parts.

Cruiser, Tactical Officer - Captain Grade 4
Escort, Engineering Officer - Lt Cmdr Grade 3

How did you spec that out and did you have any regrets about going escort/engie?

I expected FAR more innovation for ground combat, but... there isn't any. It's just the same old MMO ground combat blah blah blah as usual. BOOOOO-RIIIING.

Space combat does get boring after a while, even with 3 different "kinds" of ships. Space missions are either kill everything or find clickies on the planet surface that are often times are impossible to find. It gets very boring very quickly because it's the same shit over and over and over.

That's a refreshing response :)

I agree the ground combat could be a lot more innovative, but I think they have a base set to expand upon it if they choose to. I don't agree that it's the same old MMO ground stuff, at least I don't remember EQ2/WoW/and some others being this open and seemingly free form. I basically stopped playing those other games because they are the extreme of hamster wheel leveling which I haven't found yet in STO. Maybe it will come....

Well the planets def feel unfinished atm, I hate how you can't really tell if you can beam down to one until you're blinded by light and realize you can't move in any further. Again, it looks promising as to what they could actually do with these planets if they plan to expand upon them. I think it's pretty cool to go down on ground missions and look at around at the scenery, but I know there's not much else to do then what your mission requires.

Am I reading that right? You still have a 6 month sub and you like the game, but you're not playing it because the money, which you have already spent on it, was too much?

The first time he was talking about Champion's Online, and the second time he's talking about Star Trek Online.

What cronos said.

I have a 6 month sub for CO. I played it for about a month (actually about 3 weeks and change) before it became boring. I just could never bring myself to log in to it since.

With STO, I never subscribed, let alone purchased the game. I had fun, got to Commander, but after about 6 weeks combined Closed/Open Beta + Headstart + Retail Launch Grace Period under my belt, I could see that STO was heading the same direction. OMG PEW PEW only lasts for so long before you realize what this game isn't.

My Tactical in a Cruiser is a bit mixed.

Fore - 3 Tachyon Beam Mk VIII's, 1 Quantum Torp Mk VIII
Aft - 2 Phaser Beam Mk VIII's, 1 Chroniton Torp Mk VIII
Shields - Always Covariant (Mk V [Cap x2]
Engineering Consoles - 2 EPS Flow Reg MK VIII's, 1 RCS Turn Booster thingy
Science - +Sensor Probes x2 Mk VIII
Tactical - +All Beams x2 Mk VIII

I started running with Science Team I & II, Emergency Power to Weapons/Shields, Directed Energy Modulation, Reverse Shield Polarity and the like so I stacked a lot of +Deflector and +Deflector type stuff (unsure of specifics) and found I was being beaten to crap in certain instances. Still managed to take down 2 Keldon and 1 Galor +1 at the same time but not really fun.

So I swapped that all out and went +Sensor Probes. Dropped Science Team I & II and Reverse Shield Polarity to put in Scramble Sensors (AoE confuse) and Jam Sensors. Whilst this means I get alpha striked to Romulus and back again, once the AoE confuse kicks in (slight delay it seems) then I have 21 seconds (boosted via Sensory stuffs) to kick some nacelles whilst they go Spock on their Kirks (attack each other).

I have to say that swapping things around a lot keeps it fresh and more interesting for a little while.

As for Engineer / Escort he is quite fun and still waaaay too early to tell whether he'll be any good or not. There are a LOT of people running Engineer/Escort that swear the drop in DPS is worth the increased survivability and extra gameplay options that a handful of extra seconds in the battlefield can offer. A simple skill pop can often save you and your fleet from utter annihilation.

Release Notes - Feb 26, 2010
Items
Very Rare and Omega items may now be equipped on your Bridge Officers. Note that these items do not display on costumes yet. Costume designs for this gear will be addressed in a future update.
Impulse Engines with Full Enhancements now properly provided a bonus to Full Impulse speed.
Fixed Red Matter Capacitor so that it is functional and can be equipped on the power bar. Multiples will not stack.
Mk-X Deflectors now allow full use of all Deflector related powers.
Clarified tooltips for Torpedoes to show they disable and kill a target percent or an absolute amount of crew - whichever is less.
The Best Buy special promotion Tribble is now appropriately displayed as a Rare item.
Addressed an issue where some Grenades were not displaying visual FX when thrown.
Anti-Proton Dual Beams now use Anti-Proton stats and not Phaser stats.

Graphics
We removed the old driver warning on the 191-195 line of NVidia drivers that some players were receiving since newer drivers are not yet available for some configurations.
Game Cursor rendering is no longer reliant on the GPU which should resolve issues with cursors disappearing on SLI configurations.

Combat
Some larger enemy ships were not damaging player crew, and some smaller ships were damaging too many. This is now fixed.

Environment
Fixed an issue where some players were unable to enter the Cernan system
Added the ability to use the Depart System (minimap button) from Sol System and Earth Space Dock.

UI
Added more localized text that was missing from the Tutorial and Character Creation.
Updated the Galaxy map to make locations more accurate, fix typos, and add future game play locations.
Addressed an issue where ranking up bridge officers would unexpectedly add additional ranks.

Audio
Congratulations Lieutenant! Voice Over narration from Leonard Nimoy should now play more reliably when you level up in space.
Added the missing audio for Tractor Beam Repel.
Revised the audio for science (medical) team.

Misc.
Ensured that unique special items are being checked properly to prevent players from equipping multiple copies of unique items.

Tell Cryptic and Atari dropping the game price and adding 60 days of game play for new subs is not fair to the subs that just bought this game 3 weeks ago!! It's not okay to alienate the fan base that supported you from the beginning!

http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/81508

Well that's the risk you take in buying any game or anything at launch. First adopters always pay more for everything.

You do realize the game was already $10 cheaper (or $20 depending on where you purchased from) within a week after launch right? It was $39.99 at my local gamestop not even 5 days after launch.

An extra 60 days free? Thats unusual for a MMO. Refreshing too. Still, I'm not interested in STO though. Loved the series and movies but as a game? meh... but thats just me.

So basically $49.99 [or lower] + 90 days [30 included with the game + 60 bonus days] of subscription? [I notice Steam's price is 49.99 for the digital deluxe version] - freak awesome - 90 days of game play. :)
