Cranking up everything causes CTD's for me on ground missions, pretty much every time more than a few mobs are on the screen, I think it's a memory leak/memory related.

Not sure which setting or what combination causes the problems and it's only on the ground, could be an ATI thing, a 58XX thing, or some game engine thing.

Caused me a lot of headaches this weekend until I turned them back to the defaults, just an FYI.

It's a Cryptic thing (they don't know how to deal with ATI). Turn off Antialiasing and you'll be fine to crank everything else up. It's a known issue.

XP doesn't really use more than 3.2 gig of ram and my video card has 1 gig as well. I'm also not playing at 1600x1200, I'm on a 1280x1024 screen. I run lots of other games with no issues, it is a Star Trek Online issue, not my system. My system is older, but it is more than adequate.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P205 and was wondering if my laptop will run this game. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.73 Ghz processor and 2 gigs of RAM. I've looked at the minimum requirements and it says 1.8Ghz. What kind of problems am I looking at? Just curious before I buy this game, because I'm a huge Star Trek fan and would love to play. I know my desktop won't run it and I'm not interested in sinking a bunch of money into my desktop right now. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have a "buddy" key if anyone wants to give this a whirl. PM me.

You only get those if you bought the collector's edition or is there another way to obtain them? There's suppose to be a link on STO's front page, but I don't see it.

EDIT: n/m I see once you log into your game and are at the patch/launch screen there's a link near the top right that explains how to get a buddy key.

Ust checked my email and there is a STO one there about buddykeys. Guess they were happy with the amount of $$ they pulled in with the initial subscriber base as the last couple of releases waited some time before allowing passes.

Recent update fixes my ctd issues on my 5870 rig. Gained a few fps on the macbook pro. Seems a hair smoother recently all around.

Fixed. I run 2xAA with no issues, and I crank it up to 8x for screenshots (to slow for every day use).

Saw last night that there was a note about servers going down this morning for maintenance/a new patch.

The New York Times has a review today. Basically, they say the game is not finished and that gameplay gets boring after a few dozen hours.

Well, I canceled for now. I'll come back in a few months after they get most the bugs ironed out, fixed the skill system, added more SP content, up the level cap and implement ship interiors.

No, what it really means is "shit, we don't have enough people playing this horrible game. Quick, send out some free buddy keys so folks can pass them out and get others playing. Maybe we'll get lucky and some of those using buddy keys will actually subscribe."

It means the game sucks. Which it does.

Let me be so bold and ask why you think it sucks?

If it was a stand alone game like Bioshock then for me at least I've already gotten my $50 of entertainment value.

I expected FAR more innovation for ground combat, but... there isn't any. It's just the same old MMO ground combat blah blah blah as usual. BOOOOO-RIIIING.

Space combat does get boring after a while, even with 3 different "kinds" of ships. Space missions are either kill everything or find clickies on the planet surface that are often times are impossible to find. It gets very boring very quickly because it's the same shit over and over and over.

Cruiser, Tactical Officer - Captain Grade 4
Escort, Engineering Officer - Lt Cmdr Grade 3

And it's starting to feel stale.

Too much emphasis on large scale, untactical battles without enough variety.

I absolutely LOVE the storyline missions in the game where we discover more about the Undine and what happened to Romulus to the Deep Space 9 missions and Section 31.

But there is not enough of that.

As my Cruiser, I took down 2 Keldon Class Battleships and 1 Galor Class Cruiser (all +1 to me) and I didn't drop below 50% Hull carrying no hull repair items. Was a tough and fun fight but when things like that happen, you realise it's somewhat of a joke.

I just wanted to point this out - it's been just short of 3 weeks since launch (a little more if you played through the headstart), and an apt "I told you so" comes to mind.

This is the issue with Cryptic games in general. It's exactly what happened with Champions Online, and you could see it throughout the early City of Heroes. There's a loose storyline that isn't really followed, which a good bit of gap between times you interact with it. It's filled in my random missions which have next to no bearing on the storyline and are blatant and unrelated filler, often easy and exploitable. There is very little variety in their games, other than their character creator which incidentally top notch.

But as far as creativity, originality, storyline, and most importantly game play - Cryptic has always been lackluster.

In the end, it really comes down to "Is this title worth retail box cost plus subscription fees plus microtransaction payments?" because that's Cryptic's MO. Given there's usually a lack of content, boring and monotones game play and novelty that wears off quickly - the answer is a resounding no.

Champions Online was actually fun for a while....

I want to thank you for your feedback. I was very excited about the game and almost preordered it, but your feedback (as well as my brother's, who played in the open beta) convinced me not to buy it. It sounds like that might have been a good decision.

I bought this game on the back of your criticisms of the game. From what you said about the game itself I expected to get about a months play out of it and I cannot say I am disappointed with how it has all panned out.

I bought the game based on good information and my expectations of the game have been met. Happy customer :)
