Looks like about 4 gigglebytes of patch today... hmm...

4 gigs?! Wow they must be finding/tweaking a lot of stuff... that is either really good or really bad... I will be waiting for the reviewers to thoroughly comb through this game before I even think about buying it. STO will also have to compete with Gran Turismo 5, which I believe is coming out the same week... something I have been waiting for, for some time.

One step forward, ten steps back. I managed to poke around for maybe 45 minutes while sporadically crashing. Now it crashes on load every time. This is going to be a long day.

Wow. After the ineptness of what was today's patch (playtest has only been going on for an hour so far)... I can officially say that STO will absolutely not be ready for public consumption in February. It seems like they're actually going backwards now.

I would hold off a good 4-6 months post-launch before picking up this game.

Have the bean counters actually figured out that they make more money selling the buggy game at release than they'd make with ongoing subscriptions for a game that debuts well?

It'd be interesting to see those numbers, though I am not sure if any games have actually been released in a ready state recently, other than Aion.

And the bad press and word of mouth persists long after the game may actually be playable. I know of no one who bought Champions Online who then actually subbed to it. And having played a little Vanguard recently, I thought it was pretty good...now.

Probably going to give the STO a pass as well, as it appears to be going out the door half baked. Becoming a Cryptic trademark....

"Number 1, can you take the bridge? I need to go number 2!"

Seriously, though, I must resist the Borg implants in my head making me preorder this game just to get the neat preorder cracker jack surprise inside!
But..."RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!"

WE ARE MICROSOFT! RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!

Yep. $49.99 / $59.99 (CE), $15/mo subscription. Same as all MMOs out there.

Does STO have "micro-purchases" in a "cash shop" in addition to the month subscription? This is the newest paradigm to separate the MMO'ers from their wallets.

What this is, basically, for the unimformed, is $15/mo just to boot the game, and several extra charges for DLC to allow you to physically play the game as intended. Like 50cent to 2dollars per scroll/charge to permanently upgrade equipment, to temporarily increase equipment durability, to temporarily increase equipment effectiveness, to temporarily increase magic/technology effectiveness, to permanent buy a horse/"mount", to temporarily increase travel speeds, to temporarily increase house size, etc.

In the past, if even available in-game, they were all purchased from NPC merchants with plain ole' in-game currently. Now, in addition to the plain ole' in-game "gold", you have to exchange real life $$$ for a second (or in one case I have seen a second AND a THIRD even more expensive premium) in-game currency which is now the only way to buy these extra but required features.

The bean counters have figured out that a successful MMO can more than double their subscription revenue with these micro-purchases.

Would Shakespeare kill all the Bean Counters AFTER the lawyers, or BEFORE?

It will.

SunnyD,

Thanks so much for your posts. Been playing Eve Online for a while now and was hoping this might be a fresh new start in a universe i grew up loving... that might also save me some coin. I've got 4 eve accounts and took over a family member's account for a while. Though maybe starting over i could scale things back down to one or two. But from your descriptions of the state of things I'll stick with Eve for now.

SunnyD or anyone with a current key,

Mind grabbing me one from that site listed? I'm at work and I couldn't access this site or fileplanet to nab my own key. By the time I got home..they were all gone.

Thanks in advance

I am having the best luck at downloading this via the multipart version on Big Downloads. Fileplanet bolluxed up my download twice, in addition to the interminable wait; and the bit torrent was going way too slow.

I don't expect this to be worth the DL, but I am willing to give them a try.

For those that are still looking, WarCry still has some keys left as of a couple minutes prior to this post. Registration required, however no other hoops to jump through.

If anyone could snag me a key that'd be nice. :)

Can only access via a mobile device till I get home and they probably wouldn't last that long.

So SunnyD ... how do we help you out after all the direct hook-ups and site recommendations to get a key?

You have a Guild/Corp or anything going in STO that we could help you startup?

Got mine from Warcry, the hailingfrequency site seems to have taken a dump on itself.
