Yeah, sounds easier to pick up a 128/240 ssd just for this game than to try to maintain my 1ssd/1 platter drive setup.

EDIT: 128 for a 100gb initial? I better just consider a 250. That means I'll be picking up something new like a 500+ for my main drive and using my existing 240 for star citizen.
 
I think he means 20GB downloads but much smaller size total increases. It'll have to download entire changed parts of the game, and then replace the outdated versions. Also, some people are thinking that might be squadron 42 and SC together.
 
Looks like I will be using a 480GB SSD for this alone with mods/updates. Will probably move the Wing Commander series onto it as well just for neatness.
 
Just looking at the PAX East presentation, this game is going to absolutely crush GPUs. Using Direct Compute to simulate realistic impacts & damage system for all the ships? Damn nice. Models are ridiculous detailed!

Wandering through the RSI forums, there are several (many?) posts alluding to people pledging and then finding out their systems can't run the modules today. I know I shouldn't, but I can't help but laugh. Chris says he wants to build a game that pushes hardware to its limits. I don't think he's lying!
 
I only have a 670 GTX and it will run "ok" at 1920x1200. I get some slow down when things get crazy in arena commander. It also has a hard time in the hanger (better than it was, but the hangers now only allow so many ships). With optimizations that won't happen probably until 1-2 months before the first module of Squadron 42, I don't expect things to get better until then. In the end, Chris has stated many times before that he targeted the 980 GTX as the base card for the game.

While I haven't wandered the forums I'm betting most that cannot run it have dx9 cards. Its a dx10 only game.
 
"Fly any ship" week is up right now. As a Mustang Alpha pilot the F7CM is quite an eye-opener.

Well, think of it like in real life. It is the difference between a something developed for the civilian market vs something that was developed for the military with a civilian conversion... For combat, the one designed for the military will most likely fit better in that role. That said, not everything is about combat.
 
I hope they let us turn some of these gpu crushing options off. I know Chris wants too "push hardware to its limits" but I hope he keeps in mind that not everyone can afford that.
 
At 100GB you are alienating a large segment of the market, or maybe that's moot, considering how they already kind of alienated a large portion of gamers with their ridiculous system requirements.

These guys are going to kill their revenue stream at launch, I don't see how this game takes off unless all of a sudden 200+GB caps become the norm within 3 years.
 
They arn't planning on being entirely a digital download. Plenty of pledge levels are receiving the game in a retail box, which means they are making a retail box and plan to have it in stores for the initial bulk install. That said, I don't see them putting 25 DVD's into a box, but 2 blu-ray discs are possible.

And again, the point Chris is making is that the video game industry as a whole has been ignoring the cutting edge PC market for over a decade by focusing on consoles which have anemic graphics power. Heck, even the consoles that just came out STILL can't push 1080p 30 frames per second on games that a PC can easily do 100 frames per sec at 2560x1440. I think we will have some ability to turn off many different effects to cut down on the graphics demand (again, one of the benefits of a PC game over a console since it is pretty standard to allow to tweak those kinds of a settings in games designed for PC, yet you almost never see it on consoles).

I have 75/75 connection with no caps.

It would take about 3 hours to download 100Gb, not really a big deal for me. Though I can certainly see how it will be problematic for some people I dont think it's as many as you think.

Actually far more than you think. You are the middle minority. It's also not about the time, but the caps (that are more than likely coming to more people in the near future - but that remains to be seen).

I'm at 50 up and down, no caps (FiOS) however I NEVER get 50 down from a game torrent, so yes I could see 100GB taking the entire afternoon or I could use my old dial up Napster technique, set download then go to bed.

Cryengine tends to scale extremely well. I wouldn't be worried.

I wouldn't hold your breath. He is catering to the top 25% of the PC gaming community. Crysis series did the same to a lesser extent.

He did the same thing early on with the Wing Commander series. Made my 386DX25 mhz obsolete in terms of playing his PC games within 1 year of buying my system.

Needed a 486... then not long after needed a 1st generation Pentium.

I actually learned how to upgrade and build PCs thanks to the Wing Commander series and Privateer.

Personally, I'm pretty glad to see them trying to push PCs. Considering this game won't really be coming out until 2016, I don't really think the specs are unreasonable.

I don't mind the DL size either. It's better than compressing the hell out of everything (especially audio).


My modded Skyrim size is over 50GB, and it still looks meh.

Ridiculous system requirements? The game is coming out in 2016. Given that current hardware can run the unoptimized pre-alpha version as early as 2014, I'm pretty sure mid-range hardware in 2016 with optimization will be fine. There will also certainly be graphics options and such that run the gamut, like any big AAA game.

Besides this is a game catered to enthusiasts. There's no intent for an iPad or console port. If you think enthusiasts can't make a game successful, then take a look at Wasteland 2, or Crysis, or even back in the 90s when having a joystick was required for games like the X-Wing/Tie-Fighter series.

If your primary complaint is the download, I'd be extremely surprised if the hard drive footprint isn't optimized along with the rest of the game.

The box was for certain physical pledge levels as a pseudo "Collector's Edition." Something akin to the Homeworld Remastered Collectors Edition(w/ ship model) depending on pledge level. The physical versions also get a ship shaped thumb drive(16-32GB) which will contain the launcher application and possibly some other things like a star map and the soundtrack. The plan has always been for the game itself to be a digital download only. My original Physical Freelancer Package contained the digital download for Sq42 and Star Citizen w/ a box. They have since ended physical pledge levels because they had more box orders than expected.

If it does ever show up on shelves expect a box containing a card with a key and download link.

I was fortunate enough to meet Chris last night at the SxSW event. A very under-whelming event. They expected thousands of people and probably had closer to 300-400. SxSW is weird like that....you never really know what to expect in my experience.

Regardless, the party ended up being mostly backers and the small size allowed quite an opportunity to interact with the CIG team.

I told Chris that I was surprised pledge package prices hadn't increase as I had pledged $35 million ago and yet my pledge package was still the same price. He said pricing would increase once Squadron 42 debuts this fall. I could honestly tell he's not concerned about funding. He said "we're not ever going to be like EA....overly worried about profits".

Nice guy with a big dream. It has been (and will be) fun to see it all unfold.
 
Oh boy, redownloading the game. Crappy internet here in alabama means it'll take 4 hours instead of 30 minutes. I might end up downloading it over night and play it tomorrow.
 
Well new patch makes my hanger run much better & the asteroid hanger elevators now work. My Cutlass looks super bad ass! I had no idea it was equipped with a turret someone else could man.
