Not to sound alarmist, but it seems like free performance upgrades due to die shrinks are going to become fewer and further between. If only high end can run SC now, I really ponder how accessable it will be to the common man even a few years down the road.

I think it's in CGI's best interest to make the game playable on a wide array of hardware levels. That just increases sales.

I don't think we have too worry too much to be honest. In the 2 years or so before this actually releases, GPUs will most definitely be on 22nm or even 16nm process by then. And that is a huge difference from the current 28nm, allowing for at least 30-40% increase in die area for the same silicone size alone. And as has been seen in the past, that increase usually allows for almost doubling the performance.

Some you guys haven't played Chris Roberts games during their prime have you?

He is not known for making everyman games and being inclusive.

He is famous for making games that push the very limit of PC hardware and melt boards like its going out of style. It's a mark of pride actually.

It has nothing to do with being an elitist prick. It's simply about pushing the envelope to try and get the absolute most out of hardware.

Hell I still remember having to play with DOS trying to squeeze more memory to run every single one of his games. From Freelancer to WCIII/IV Chris was the one that got me to upgrade my computer or not be able to play his games. It was freaking expensive back then (I recall paying $800 for 1MB of RAM) and spent everything I had on computer upgrades.

Today is slightly different.

You can run the game in low quality and chug along in a mid level system or move the game to medium quality on a top of the line system and enjoy 60FPS but only at 1080p. If you want 1440p or 4k expect to wait until release in 2016 to upgrade.

And I normally appreciate such attitudes from developers. Except that Star Citizen has extremely janky animations and the interior textures are a shiny plastic. And normally that is not a problem but each development goal is more and more features, with no end in sight.

Maybe game development is just more messy than I expected but following this game's progress makes me think that game publishers exist for a reason.

I seem to have a few different starting hanger options, is there a way to switch between them?
I like the asteroid hanger but it seems real dangerous especially the puddle of oil at the bottom of the stairs and the missing railing above the 90' fall into the asteroid.

This looks cool as shit but is moving along at a snails pace.

I'd like to be a founder but am afraid I'll grow old and die before I see the game.

Log onto the rsi website and login. Hangar choices are under my hangar.

You cannot switch in game if that is what you are asking.

Especially when you continually add features/content to that video game.

And as the budget grows and the features you need to deliver grows the length of development not surprisingly also increases. If people keep buying the game in its current state will it ever become a game?!

What makes me concerned about this game is how they added the FPS element to it. That's like adding an entire new game that needs to be produced.

If they were building their own engine from the ground up you'd have a point, but they're using CryEngine, so a lot of the work is already done.

This game is most definitely NOT for the common man. Mass appeal means stripping out features the rest of us would miss. I dont see why hardware requirements would be any different.

There used to be a time when people talked about upgrading their PCs to be able to play the latest games instead of expecting that games would support last years PCs so that everyone could play the game. Nowadays its much more common for games to support being played on something that most gamers wouldn't even consider a gaming GPU (like an iGPU) just to be accessible, and in the process hurting the games capabilities. We can't have it both ways, new mechanics come from higher requirements, not just better graphics.

My concern with Star Citizen is not the hardware requirements, by the time the game is released they probably wont be that impressive anymore, games in development are regularly hard to run with the anticipation that performance will continue increasing as it has for 40 odd years. Now the attitude that now we have enough hardware and everything should stop is what bugs me, I don't understand it at all.

But SC is THE game that goes against that attitude where enough is enough.

*Lube your wallets, they're gonna need it

I'm sticking with my Hornet Ghost till the game comes out of beta. Last thing I want to do is buy like 10 ships and then find out the final game is not quite what I expected. 🙁

Same. I'll likely expand my pledges beyond my Super Hornet and 315p, but I want to see them further along in customizable controls for my HOTAS and get the IFCS system more joystick friendly.

I was about to pull the trigger on the Reclaimer when I was instructed I can only have it if I sell my Tali... not gonna happen. New house takes priorities over games.
