Are you also going to amazon and say you pledge money to amazon when you buy something and the merchandise you get is a "reward"?
I have no idea how much R&D is done there for the actual game, I guess $50M raised as of now is sufficient to actually develop such a game...but there is no question IN MY MIND that a huge percentage of development there is focused on merely creating ships which go on the site as "merchandise". You don't find it odd that the game itself is still in early Alpha but there are pages of SHIPs to buy?
1.) That's an absolutely absurd comparison. No, I pay Amazon money for a finished good that is delivered to me nearly immediately. I have pledged money to CIG to support the game and receive the product some time in the future. As a reward for my pledge level, and the uncertain nature of development, they are offering backers goodies, either IRL swag (USB installer, whatnot) or in-game content that can be earned normally through in game.
2.) They're making a giant, beyond-AAA level title. It takes some funding. Also, it's a FREAKING SPACE GAME, they have multiple teams on designing and implementing space ships, you know, the main point of playing a space sim?
I just don't get the whole paying the cost of a AAA title for a virtual asset thing. I'm interested in the game, but it seems to have the profit model of World of Tanks, etc which I stopped playing because of how money grubbing it was.
You're not buying the ship, you're supporting the game development and getting a full copy of the finished game at the end. As a bonus, you also have the option of choosing some sort of in-game reward for the early backing. You won't be able to purchase these ships when the game goes live, so this is not the game model.
