Backers will have pledged approximately $60 to $70 million before it sells a single copy to the general public on release date... Funding is the least of their problems. If they offer a new ship with LTI and other type funding options... it could easily go past $80 million. SC is about to hit the $44 million (80%+ mark)

Pretty amazing watching gaming history.

It's a tremendous risk. There's a banking/accounting concept called moral hazard that applies in full force to the way this game is being funded/developed.

When it's out, and well-reviewed, I'll be first in line to buy a copy. I think anyone putting Texa$ into the project at this point is a fool.

Well I bought the basic package to get access to the modules a long time ago but I agree with you. Buying unseen based on promises is extremely bad and its not like we are getting a return like an investor/publisher would. A publisher giving money at the concept stage would be getting an upside on their risk, they would be taking much of the profits. As a group funding all we get is the game, and the developers get to keep the profits if it succeeds. That is a bad deal for the investors.
 
It's not an investment, Kickstarter is NEVER an investment in the traditional sense, and those saying it's a bad one miss the entire point of it, which is amusing. As for Mandres, I'm not a fool at all for dropping money on this. How would you buy the end product? Without our donations there would be no game. I seeded my money to encourage a game and genre that would otherwise be dead in the water, that's everything I've wanted, and the money I've seeded is not going to break the bank. I'm very pleased with the direction, progress, and communication of SC (unlike some other efforts, hate you MWO).
 
I agree with SLU Aequitas entirely here. This genera would never have been brought back without a game being funded like this. It also helps tremendously that it has raised this much money. Every game publisher out there is now watching this game, and possibly kicking themselves for not developing some of the concepts that they have been pitched over the last few years for space sim games.
 
I like the genre, therefore I threw money at it. I don't particularly care whether I get "ROI" on it or not. It can't be worse than the "ROI" I got from MwO, which still got me hundreds of hours of entertainment, and which I still occasionally play.

If anything, I will be happy that they are pushing the boundaries of what is possible (or more importantly, viewed as being possible) in PC game development and PC hardware (4k, Oculus Rift, etc.)

Hell, this game is making me interested in buying an Oculus Rift whenever they release a higher resolution version. And maybe a 4K monitor.

All major gaming publishers slammed the door in his face... once the SC Kickstarter made a record... Chris Roberts was like.. damn.. I can do this on my own!

As a shameless SC 'Fanboy' I'm waiting for SC branded game aids. These cheap ones will do for Alpha. I may upgrade to something better by Beta if the SC branded products aren't out yet. Plus I will review both of them after using them for a month or 2 in Alpha.
 
I have turned down several offers to buy my Retaliator LTI for $400 to $600, it's amazing how much it's appreciated and how many Constellation owning friends have sold up and bought one in the last few weeks.

The Thrustmaster T.16000M works pretty well in X3, Arma III (flying only) & IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover. It will of course become a 2nd stick with my HOTAS Warthog for SC.
 
I have a Saitek X52 Pro HOTAS that I almost never use. Dogfight module will probably be the game that motivates me to do the magnet mod for it. 😛

Well I don't know if anyone else has seen the new competitors of the Rift like the ANTVR. Basically, it is similar to the Rift, but uses a different lense system so that you see the entire screen (the rift's image is really circular). It also has cutouts at the bottom of the frame that you can slide open so that you can view things like keyboards, controllers, etc. when you have the device on. It is a little sketchy on the resolution, so I do not know if it is straight up 1920x1080 per eye or if it is like the Rift in that it is two 960x1080 panels which combine to form 1920x1080 (even though they really do not). Their prototype is also designed to work with standard HDMI 3D formats, so you can watch 3D movies on it, 3D games from PS3/PS4/Xbox360/Xbone/PC. Basically it looks like it is really a step ahead of the Rift in terms of design being able to support standard formats that already exist, as well as more advanced integrated positional tracking (as opposed to needing an external camera for tracking).

That said, it remains to be seen if they will get the traction they need to go compete against the Rift, especially given the backing in terms of funding the Rift has now received by being acquired by facebook.
 
Also I know the focus lately has been almost all on the DFM, but I would like to see more about the character modeling technology they have been working on like the facial expression recognition and translation engine so that the avatar models in the game mimic what you are doing in real life. This is something that hasn't been spoken about lately, and I was just wondering if they would post more information about this (will probably need to send it in as a forum feedback question, but wingman's hanger is ending in just a couple more episodes, to be replaced by something new and they may or may not have a similar format with a question and answer section).
 
The key things to making VR viable are reduced latency, low persistence and very accurate head tracking that is not only really fast but also doesn't drift over time. One of the advantages of the external camera is its a fixed reference point, so it can allow resetting to a common known point, fixing the drift inherent in other mechanisms for tracking positional movement and not just yaw. Only tracking yaw is the reason why the Dev prototype one made people really sick when they looked at the ground, because the image wasn't tilting forward.

So for these things to compete its not just about other features its about getting the core aspect correct, without that ultra low latency and highly accurate tracking its ultimately not going to be acceptable to people.

That's quite the hanger man, very nice. I tried for the 2nd round of Idris's(i?) when they were released but like good concert tickets the website was crawling and then they were gone.

My F7C-S and 315P now seem inadequate. However I just bought a X55 Rhino (for $187 😀) and a Premium Beta copy of Elite: Dangerous, so I'm out of wife-acceptable spending on gaming for right now :'(

A few people are starting to speculate that the 900 FUs is for an internal cargo bay and does not include the holding tanks. I mean look at the Tali, without torpedo bays its over 700.
