I'm trying to find a good plan for my first cell and i think I may go w/ Sprint... I like their newer phones with the speaker phone and this $39/month plan seems ok. Are there any other deals to get the phone for free almost? And do you have to pay for activation?

I'm in Austin, hows the coverage area here??

on campus it sucks MAJOR @$$... i've had numerous instances where I would be walking outside and have to make 4 calls in the span of a minute because they keep getting dropped... it is supposeduly better farther away from campus, like my g/f's place in Round Rock usually has fine reception...

SprintPCS sucks in chicago. buyer beware, i get dropped a lot and other sprint users i know has the same problem. 3 different model sprint phones. I think its just as bad in San Fran too.

i have a samsung 8500 my plan consists of 500 anytime minutes, 1500 nights/weekends, nation wide free long distance, and 6 months free wireless web (which ive now canceled). i entered a 1 year contract and im half way into it. my plan is $49.99 + $4 insurance + tax comes out to $59.99 a month. another thing i want to brag about is that i got my phone on discount from bestbuy for $130, it retails at $199 and i got the 3 year performance service plan for cheap. im very happy w/ this phone

If you want a cool sprint phone check out Circuit city I saw the Smasung Uproar 64MB MP3 phone for around $250 and there is a $30 rebete to. This phone sells for $399 at the sprint store and amazon. This was in Knoxville TN today.

I used to have the Samsung 8500 and its an allright phone but too bulky to go in your pocket. Also one day when I dialed *2 to talk to the cs the phone's firmware upgraded over the air and the effect of that was that I had more dropped calls after this &quot;upgrade&quot; so if your your phone works fine dont let them uprgade your firmware and call their 800 number intead of dialing *2. This is just from my experience.

hey guys, i am looking to upgrade my phone, i dont know if any of you looked on sprints site recently but the sanyo 5000 is HOT!!! that phone is awesome, anyway $500 for a cellphone is way too much. i was wondering if anyone new of a cheaper place to get the phone from or any rebates??? (rebates would be more helpful since i can get $100 off if i order through sprint)

Nearly the same situation here. The obvious choice is to go with Sprint because of their free-long distance option. As long as neither of you will be out in the boonies and thus needing analog coverage [which I know nothing about] then Sprint will be your most cost-effective solution.

The Sprint deal that this thread is about is also a good idea, but don't jump the gun, there could be more special packages coming out soon.

I've heard that in NYC, the best coverage is actually Sprint. Unfortunately, I can't say that for Baltimore.

Here in Iowa, coverage isn't too bad at all. I'm pretty satisfied, although (admittedly) once I go a mile or so beyond a large city it will switch to digital/analog roam (usually analog, which sucks battery like a m/f). I'm using the Samsung SCH-3500, and I love it. About the same size as my old StarTac 3000 Analog, and the sound quality is phenomenal. Not to mention the wireless web functionality. I'd love it if they improved their coverage (in fact, many of the smaller towns which are supposedly in the Sprint PCS network have no coverage) but for now, I can't get a better deal from anyone else.

I've got Sprint in NYC (using the Samsung 3500), and I think it's just okay. For some reason, Rockefeller Center seems to be a deadzone for reception for me (among some other random places in the city). I've gotten many &quot;Network Busy&quot; messages when trying to dial as well. Also, don't even think about using the phone in a subway station (not even if you're relatively close to the exit). I guess it's just NYC, because I never had any problems with service in Houston. Because there's no one perfect cell phone service in NYC (I hear Verizon is suck), I have to say that you can't do much better than Sprint in NYC.

Their service is ok but if you ever need customer support ORDER THE PIZZA because it will take hours before you get through.

I have sprint but after my contract is over i will goto AT&amp;T.

You need to wait until after midnight or early morning to get through to Sprint's customer service. I've only had to wait a few minutes max during these times. (although I waited an hour once when I called @ 6pm!)

Also, Sprint's CSRs are D-U-M-B!!! I mean humourously dumb... I mean some of the dumbest people (with jobs) that I ever talked to. But they seem to eventually understand what you are trying to do (after you are put on hold a few times and they obviously get to consult with a manager of some sort).

Other than that I love Sprint. I get 250 mins anytime+ 750 mins nights and weekends for $30/month (no long-distance, but I use a calling card for that anyway). After tax and fees, $36/month.

Samung 8500 is a great phone - noone ever knows I am even on a cell phone even while driving at highway speeds. The phone is great with noise rejection. Also, fits in my pocket! (not sure why someone would think this phone is bulky). I also dropped it from 3 feet onto concrete without a scratch.

The thing even worked in most of the casinos in Vegas without a problem.

Sprint did upgrade their system last February after they had sold so many lines in the last Christmas specials. All phones required a software upgrade to deal with the system upgrade. Without the upgrade you will experience dropped calls and LD calls that won't go through. The upgrade to my Nokia 6185 worked great as an added benefit the phone boots from pushing the on button to full signal in less than 5 seconds. If you have a Nokia on Sprint service and it still takes longer than that to boot then your phone needs the software update.

Noxipoo, Sprint service in Chicago is excellent, unless you are talking about downtown among the tall buildings in which case all phones on all carriers will experience some problems. I use my sprint phone in Chicago and suburbs extensively and have great service and sound quality everywhere. I do have a Nokia handsfree install kit with an external antennae that I mounted in an old Motorola bag phone bag so I can move it from car to car that I use whenever I'm in the car but I've never had any problems using it as a handheld either. Plus I love the Nokia kit as it comes with a half width full size handset so I can have private conversations and conversations in noisy areas and still keep the phone plugged into the kit.

Here's somthing I recently discovered that may help some of you. If you are a relative of an Anheuser-Busch or Boeing employee (and probably other large corporations also), you qualify for the Sprint volume discount. This is really a good deal. For either A-B or Boeing, you get a phone credit of $150 (which makes several phone choices totally free), and there is no activation fee with a 2 yr. plan. In addition, A-B employees &amp; relatives get a 20% discount on their monthly plan, and Boeing employees &amp; relatives get 25% off the monthly rate. I was already a Sprint customer when I discovered this deal, and a phone call to CS took care of switching my account to receive the 25% monthly discount (no new contract required to get the monthly discount). I am aware of siblings, cousins, parents, aunts and uncles who have all taken advantage of this, so the rep I dealt with was very liberal with the &quot;relative&quot; eligibility. Also, I asked him if I ever wanted to update my current phone (Samsung 3500), but keep my great old plan, could I do that. He said yes, if I agreed to a 2-year contract the phone would be free, no activation, and I could keep my plan and my #. I haven't tried that yet. Finally, the phone is sent directly to your home already programmed, and there's no shipping charge. We just got my son a Touchpoint 2200 phone for graduation, and it was totally free with the 2-yr. plan. There are lots of phone reviews at www.cnet.com. If interested, you have to go through the Sprint rep for either Boeing or A-B to get a new phone and plan. The rep just faxed the forms and info to me. If you only want to start getting the monthly discount because you are a relative (or employee), you can just call CS and tell them you are eligible for the Nationwide Volume Based Discount (that's how it appears on my monthly bill). Well, i guess the best way to win an argument is to be on both sides. AT&amp;T did buy cellular one. it says so on their website.

Why do people just assume Cell one is Cingular without going over facts so readily available on the web? All you have to do is look at AT&amp;T website and look at all teh buildings that used to be called Cellular on and now they say AT&amp;T! Cingular is PACBELL WIRELESS after a name change. ALl this stuff is on the web and CNBC, there is really no need for confusion.

It's my understanding that Cingular is actually a combination of a few cell phone companies. I know that my provider (Bellsouth DCS) is now called Cingular. I think this helped them gain better national coverage.

But, for other people who don't like or even want Sprint. Here are two new plans that I know of now:

With CINGULAR: For $39 Bux a month, you can get 500 minutes daytime, and unlimited nights and weekends NATIONWIDE. My total is $42, cuz I'm a sucker and wanted voicemail. The included minutes are nationwide also. Only thing that sux, is that they still have roaming a lot of places. So look into this first, but if your always in your coverage area, not bad at all. With ATT SUNCOM: (Now, I couldn't find this on their site, so it may vary) They have for $45 bux a month, Free nights and weekends nationwide UNLIMITED. I kno for damn sure that their coverage area is a lot better. My friend just got this deal, in my opinion, this would be a better deal. You will have to go in store to check this out. ATT

I already signed a year with Cingular so I got screwed, oh well.

Just a possible alternative for you Non-Sprint Fans.
