This works the other way around too, a very good friend of mines best friend was in a long term relationship with a grad student from India. They had been dating about 4 years and had just gotten engaged. He told her he was going to India to tell his parents about proposing to her.

Trash sent her an email from India saying he was getting married there and couldn't see her anymore. Never spoke to her ever again, needless to say she was pretty fucked up for awhile after that.
