Very few shows could compare to Rome though.

Correct. I'm not looking for a new Rome... Nothing can really replace or replicate that. If Spartacus takes all the filth and piggery and violence and blood of Rome though, compresses it and processes it for me, I'll enjoy that too (for totally different reasons than Rome though)

Just finished watching the First season, Blood and Sand. OMG OMG OMG, the episode name was "Kill them all" and boy did they do justice to the name. Put all the blood spilling, throat cutting and gut spilling from all the previous episodes together and it still wont add up to this episode... It was unbelievable. However, the gore of this show is not that disturbing as the fake-ness and cheap graphics gives it the comic book look not disturbing but distasteful. But no complaints, I like the show overall.

One complaint though, the sex and nudity has dramatically gone down from the first episode to the last...

I believe in the extras one of the producers says they're intentional going for that "graphic comic" look with the special effects.

for me, Sweagin! is simply one of the greatest characters ever created. next to Plainview, of course.

He is/was great. No arguing that. But you also can not argue the greatness ot Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus. THIRTEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed this show. Too bad no more seasons will be made. :(

really? wow? that's sad for sure :( they did the same with Rome... whats up with all the Roman shows being cut after season 2.

I read somewhere earlier in this thread that Gods of the Arena is basically a prequel? in that case they wont show the story after his escape? the real revolt? that is sad...

the main actor has lymphoma. he's gone in and out of treatment. Things are still up in the air. This prequel was hashed together in response to his being unable to continue with the storyline.

I'm not reading up on it, but I assume they still haven't made a decision with continuing the actual storyline.

Also, these type of series are massively expensive to produce. Spartacus probably isn't as bad b/c it's mostly digital (and generally looks like shit b/c of this). Rome was all set work.

it's a long-running thing in Hollywood that Westerns, period pieces...projects that require extensive set construction are usually rejected b/c of the insane cost. This is why Rome was canned midway through season 2 (at least they were able to hash together some sort of closure).

This is mostly why Deadwood was canned, but I think a lot of it was becuues it just wasn't popular enough, which is sad.

Spartacus will have another season. They recently announced Liam Mcintyre as the replacement for the lead. He even looks like the previous guy that played Spartacus.

Here is more info:
Liam McIntyre Replaces Andy Whitfield in Spartacus

Liam McIntyre, an Australian actor who starred in HBO's The Pacific, has been tapped to replace Andy Whitfield in Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Starz announced Monday.

McIntyre, 28, steps into the role after Whitfield was forced to drop out after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Production on the Starz series was initially halted in March. After his cancer resurfaced, Whitfield was forced to drop out to resume aggressive treatment.

"Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead Spartacusforward," Starz President Chris Albrecht said. "It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he's dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going."

Production on the second season of Spartacus is slated to resume by spring. Starz will air the prequel series, titled Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, starting Friday at 10/9c.

I've been watching the first season because of this thread...I actually already had it on my NFLX queue but hadn't had a chance to watch it before last week.

Season 1 starts out a bit slow, but you will not be disappointed if you stick it out until the end. The last few episodes are borderline epic! :D

Season 2 (prequel) so far has been great. Not much Arena action so far, but I am sure the last two episodes will fix that. We are still waiting to see Crixus rise to power.

For those following the current episodes, here is a preview for episode 5:

BTW, anyone else find it funny that this thread started out bashing the series by the OP, but now has become the unofficial Spartacus thread and even recruits new viewers...

Yeah, I just got through "Delicate Things" (right after they fight Theokoles). I'm enjoying it so far mostly because it reminds me a little bit of Gladiator which is one of my favorite movies.
