What a great ending to a great series. They did an outstanding job keeping me guessing on how they were going to truly end things.

Rome was probably a better series but they were different and Rome only had 2 seasons before the set burned down and they cancelled the whole thing rather than rebuild.

wow.. never knew that was the reason Rome was canceled :(
i liked the series too. thought it was canceled due to low ratings and/or expense in making the show

what caoused the fire?

I don't remember the cause but I pulled this from wikipedia.

The production is regarded as one of the most expensive in the history of television. Funding was generously employed to recreate an impressively detailed set featuring a number of Roman Villas, the Forum, and a vast slum area of the ancient city of Rome. A significant part of this set was later destroyed by a fire that burned down a portion of the Cinecittà Studios in 2007. According to HBO, the fire started after they had finished filming the second season.

Reading around though it sounds like it was cancelled before the fire. That's not how I remember it. I thought the expense of rebuilding would make a season 3 impossible.

It was cancelled in 2006, well before the fire. It had a 2 year contract and the ratings never justified the expense. They knew it was going to be axed before production wrapped, so they rushed through a few major events to get to a natural stopping point. There was talk about a possible movie, but that never came to pass. Perhaps the expense of rebuilding the sets is what killed that particular project.
