What's wrong with a little historical accuracy? Men had rape for dinner, it was just the way things were done back then.

A little late to the party...

I found that, after the initial shock, I stopped really noticing some of it. There were few sex scenes that were erotic, a lot of them were kind of perfunctory or sort of nasty in a decadent way. After you watched more than a few episodes, it had a "this is just how it was back in the day" quality to it. The blood was so over the top and cartoonish that it just didn't bother me.

I thought the acting was really good and found the show to be pretty damn entertaining.

weeds is not even CLOSE to being one of the best TV shows.

it was entertaining the first few seasons, but the past 3 seasons are complete shit and they are getting progressively worse.

i only watch it now because i have invested a lot into the show, and it is only like 25 minutes per episode so its not much time wasted.

the show is aboslutely fucking terrible now though and has NOTHING to do with the original premise of the show.

Just wanted to comment on this and say I completely agree. Weeds has been shit since somewhere after/during season3. Not sure what happened but it used to be a good show.

As to Spartacus I really don't care for it but others do, works for me.

My opinion is that shows need to have MORE sex in them, but only if the actors are reasonably hot.

After watching Weeds straight through, I don't think it gets worse at all. If the characters never did anything, or progressed in any way, then people would complain that it was stale and boring.

It has a story arch. It is going where it is supposed to go.

As for Spartacus--it is mostly garbage. Though i did watch the whole damn series. :hmm:

Spartacus started out so fucking unbelievable stupid. but in the end of last season it really picked up.

the acting is terrible, the dialog is terrible, the effects are terrible, the scenes and costumes are terrible, the fighting is terrible ... but something about this show has a B level quality to it
that I really enjoyed.

i have the first 2 eps of this season at home but haven't watched them yet. will get around to it this weekend and catch up on ep3 probably as well.

yeah, basically this. :D

and it's jsut a 2 episode "prequel" mini series. seems the 2nd season is still up in teh air

i saw 15 minutes of this show over the span of two episodes i think. during those 15 minutes Gannicus, while blindfolded, slowly but partially decapitated his opponent on a sword that was stuck in a block of stone or wood. in the other episode he was forced to do the nasty with his buddy's wife.

this show is awesome.

And she LIKED it! That scene was hawt.

There are 6 episodes for the prequel. Episode 3 just aired, and there are 3 more to go.

Oh, I see. someone mentioned that Netflix was updating as it happened. It was only 2 episodes when I noticed it.

I don't think I want to watch more than the first episode of this mini thing.

At least with the normal series you're dealing with an actual historical event (The rebellion led by Spartacus being the largest slave revolt in history--his campaign actually distracted Caesar long enough to do something about it, forcing him to send 2? legions after him.) But much of what is known about that is rather hazy.

AFAIK, Spartacus and Crixus are the only individuals known to have existed in this series, everything else--including who Spartacus really was, and Batiatus as well, I believe--is fabricated for the sake of story.

I loved the red-head mom chick from Rom, I could watch her taking a bath all day.

Marc Antony's penis, not needed...

Spartacus is great. Every TV series should have a man drink wine from a woman's breast when they celebrate.

According to what I read, Doctore (Onemeous or however you spell his name) also existed and was one of the ring leaders of the revolt along with the real Spartacus and Crixus. Batiatus did exist as well but as you noted, his portrayal is completely made up.

This is a show I always wanted to catch up on.
Does it make more sense to watch Blood and Sand first or start with Gods of the Arena now?

Id start with season 1 and then watch the current prequel. So far its interesting back story on certain characters.

I love the show personally (other then season 1 pilot which was horrible). I just love the back stabbing, deceiving, caniving going on...great story :)

This. As soulcougher said, don't be disappointed after the first couple of episodes, which do suck. The series gets much better and is excellent towards the end. I enjoy all of the political intrigue.

Except, unlike the murdered victim in a snuff film, no one's rights have been violated. Besides, there's already "Faces of Death", various war documentaries and plenty of other ways for you see real gore and murder on TV anyway.

Like, say, the evening news.
Seriously complaining about this show, knowing it's a premium channel, and it's on at a later primetime slot, is silly. I like how it's filling the backstory. I almost gave up on the show after the first two episodes last season, but it got much better, a lot faster than I thought it would.

Funny you say that as I did watch the pilot and thought it sucked. And was disappointed. I'm all for gratuitous blood, sex and violence, and thought Spartacus would fit that bill. But it was so shitty...

I figured watching Blood and Sand 1st too would be the better route. Just wanted to confirm. Ok I'll start in on this ASAP. (I have WAY too much TV to watch...)

For all of those reasons, I much prefer Rome--the HBO series. It certainly helps that the production value is so much better. Though that really is what also kept me watching Spartacus. It is done well in this series.

Spartacus is very cheap in comparison, but certainly entertaining. I honestly think a lot of what is assumed about lifestyle at the time is assumption based on "what has been found."

For instance, Pompeii is well-known as a hive of vice. I think shows like Spartacus interpret that to represent all of Roman daily life, simply because this is one of the most well-preserved ancient Roman cities, which I find to be rather inaccurate use of history, at best.

It's like millenia from now (our current culture and lifestyle having somehow been demolished, buried, and forgotten), a city like Las Vegas being unearthed and becoming the de-facto representation of what defines normal for us.

..or how about a place like Riyad representing all of human culture, law, and daily life during this time? :D

Now--Spartacus does take place in ancient Capua--essentially modern Naples, which is also where you find Pompeii. So in that sense, it is probably accurate to what life was like in that region of the Roman empire (remember that the concept of "Italy" did not occur until ~1890). IIRC, the tagline (read:warning) at the beginning of the episodes simply says "accurate portrayal of life at that time."--not life in Capua. So I'd take that to be rather misleading.
