Sore Legs

Diamond Member
Been doing a lot of running as of late (either run on the tredmill for an hour or so or play Ultimate Frisbee with friends for an hour) every night for the past week and a half...(trying to get back in shape). Ever since I have had horrible leg aches...it is no fun 🙁 I would think that after a few days of running my legs would be used to the running...but i guess not 🙁

at least the weight loss is going well...7lbs in 1 weeks time!! 😎

man they just finished the skatepark here in town. i was there for about 10 hours on saturday and sunday each. i'm sore as hell too. my legs feel weak and my arms do, too.

You need to take breaks or you will end up hurting yourself/pulling something. Try running for 3 days, take a day off, run for 3 days, take a day off.

who cares about the legs....7 lb loss is sweet! try getting new shoes 🙂

just got some yesterday...hopefully that helps!

I got those new nikes, the ones that simulate being barefoot...they are amazing! you really do feel like you're barefoot! haven't run a lot of distance with them yet but for 3-4 mile runs they have been perfect for me so far

run 3 days straight?! 😕 😛

I know what you mean...but it turns out when I play Ultimate...its not all that much running anyways...lots of short sprints...so it all balnces out

Don't be surprised when you don't lose any this week. Most of that 7 pounds is probably water. Increse your water intake to a gallon a day.

yeah I know...but I HAVE been drinking about a gallon a day here at work...but yeah...im sure most of the loss is water weight....its good for morale anyways!

What's hurting? Large muscle groups (hammy's, quads, calves?) or more connective tissues like your knees and around your ankles and hip bones?

Or just everything? 😛

Three ibuprofen 3x a day will help cut down on inflamation and help things feel and recover better.

I do a lot of skating for hockey and I've never been sore even after 2 games a night. This weekend I played a few hours of volleyball and my calves are ridiculously sore from all the jumping. Damn different muscle groups. :|

My legs are sore, I was dancing (with girls) at John Barleycorn's on Saturday night (the one by Wrigley). Then I was playing softball on Sunday. And tonight I might be playing volleyball, if it doesn't get cancelled due to low turnout.

its basiclly everything 😛 Getting a good stretch usualy helps them but ive gotten used to it. I dont have any ibuprofen here at work...but i never really thought of taking some...Ill try that when i get home!

skateboarding is a lot more physically demanding than a lot of people think. plus people think i'm a punk, and believe me i do not dress the part.

Juice Box.

Hopefully I can help with a little advice, seeing as how I used to do a lot of running, including a couple marathons.

Running is hard on your legs. Some people don't feel the same pain as others. Personally, I don't run as much as I used to because of knee pain, it runs in the family. I'm only 25 years old too... If you think after running for a month or so that the pain is just not going away, then maybe you should try cycling or something. That's what I did.

I don't want to discourage you though, running is good for you. Just be careful not to really hurt yourself.

I'd suggest avoiding the treadmill if possible. I really hate treadmills because your stride will not be the same as if you were running outdoors. This could be part of the pain problem because maybe you aren't taking as long of strides and are landing differently on your feet.

Having good shoes is SOOOO important. I personally wear Aasics because they fit my feet best. Different brands are better for different people. Don't just buy Nike because they are a brand you know. You should find a dedicated running shoe store and try on a lot of shoes. You may also need to get special prescription inserts for your feet. There are special "foot doctors" that can help you figure that out if needed.

Stretching is also important. Make sure you do it before and after you run. I have a bad habit of not stretching after a run, which isn't good, but luckily it doesn't bother me as much as some other people. You should probably spend 5 to 10 minutes stretching each time. Try googling for web sites that give tips on how to best do it, I have my own routine that may not be best.

Finally, some people will say to just take Aleve or Ibuprophen or something to relieve the pain. You should NOT even need this... Unless if you are doing something really wrong. If it hurts that bad, take a break and see a doctor.

good luck. PM me if you need any specific tips or anything. I'm no expert, but I might be able to help with any questions you have.

I feel your pain buddy. My legs are sore right now too. I'm running low mileage right now (5-6 miles 4 times a week), but I was out of commission for so long that even that affects me. Plus, I sprinted a lap around a track this weekend without warming up or stretching so my quads hate me for that. 🙂

You should stretch a lot, get a Stick or something to work out the lactic acid and tightness.

yeah...I try to avoid the tredmill when possible but with this heat...its a lot easier to run indoors. I did get some new running shoes and I think they are gonna work out well. I don't stretch probably as much as I should...but ive been tryng more and more b/c of how important I know it is. Thanks for the advice btw

eh, heat is good for you. 😉 Actually, I was running a bit this spring but stopped because of the heat. I prefer riding my road bike in the heat because at least then I get more of a breeze. I also try to only go out after dinner because maybe, just maybe, the temps will drop a little...
