I'm sure etronics will have this much cheaper. This looks sweet.

And yea, sony seems to have a way with making batteries last forever. One of the things I love about my MD player/recorder.

Check engadget for better details, I might put off buying a Shuffle for the gig+FM tuner version @ $200, expected in May.

OLED, yum.

And for $50 more, people can buy th 4GB Mini iPod instead of the 1GB Shuffle. But in either case, you'll run out of battery at the end of the day. Sony portable players on the other hand, don't.

remember, you're comparing a flash-based mp3 player with a HD-based one. also, there's the size difference. for some people, size may be more important than the extra storage the iPod offers. for example, i would never buy a HD-based iPod for working out, running, etc.

Not to mention it would be much heavier.

Where does iApple fall on your view list?

iApple = ripoff² ? 😕

Don't know, don't think I've ever owned any Apple products. Unless you count Quicktime.
How were you ripped off by Sony?

Generally I see them as pricier than other brands of the same category. But for a while I stuck with them, purchasing Sony walkmans, various Sony headphones and later a Sony Minidisc player, Sony receiver.

I now have a broken collection of Sony walkmans 🙁 Some were my fault, dropped them. One I had no idea what happened, the FM started reading signals from 60-80 instead of the usual 88-108. One's tape playing mechanism jammed and wouldn't forward the tape.
The sony headphones only had a warranty of 30-90 days. And i've had various problems with it, either one or both earpieces not working after a while.
The Sony minidisc player died even though I treated it well. It couldn't read the disc after a while.
The Sony receiver (I have two, one my dad let me have from the 1990s and one I bought in 2001). The 2001 receiver broke down after two years. It started not receiving FM signals and then went on to not getting any output to channel B. So I had to go back to the 1990s one and its worked fine.

My friend also purchased Sony stereo system for his car, with Speakers, Sub, Amp. The Amp died on him. He replaced it with another brand and later replaced everything because he thought it was crap.

So now I stay away from it because its overpriced and breaks down which led to my conclusion
Sony = ripoff.

Sony low-end home audio = crap
Sony car audio = all crap
Sony portables = I'd choose them over anything in my experience.

EDIT: Even my Sony CLIE has been awesome for 5 years. Needs a new battery pack now though...doesn't hold charge more then a couple weeks even with zero useage.

Same. The only sony products I've bought are early DVD players that weights a ton, and Sony Discman (Japan high end models) that are indestructible.

Sony is overpriced.
There is pretty much ALWAYS an alternative which is either better at the same price, or cheaper and equal.
Hence Sony = bad.

you have much better luck with Sony products than I've had. My dad's 1996 Sony 32 inch is working great. Although they are a bit more expensive than other brands. Friend has a 27 inch WEGA, looks beautiful.

It has a OLED DISPLAY.

NO player on the market has that.

solid state player will never compare to a HD player. They are for different markets. Solid sate = light and no skipping. HD will skip eventually and it is a lot heavier th en a solid state player.

It looks very good but I won't be buying it. I don't need to listen to music when I work out.

Koing

As soon as I saw this announcement (somewhere else), I decided this is my replacement for my Creative Nomad II that I use for running and lifting. I bought it back in 1998 or something like that (can't even remember!), but the headphone jack crackles with any headphones so it's time for something new. I won't buy Apple so Sony is a good choice for me. Plus, I have OLED display on a portable CD burner I own, and those are really cool looking. 😉

its software will probably suck. well thats sonys track record😛

the nicer ones cost so much you might as well get an ipod mini😛 they are missing the point of the flash based player..keep it cheap as possible.

seems they finally caved..so yes mp3. but who knows how intrusive their softare is.

256mb..u don't need a screen for that pathetic amount of space😛 what a joke. 256 shouldn't exist, let alone at that price.

I use 128MB right now, and it's plenty for me for workouts and running. I can probably use 256 quite nicely, but 512 would be overkill for me.

You bought the F707 in mid 1992? Make that 2001: http://www.pbase.com/cameras/sony/dsc_f707
