Cops are on their way over to make a report right now.

Car was parked in the drive unlocked. It was taken between 9:00PM last night, and 4:00PM this afternoon. It's an Aiwa CDC-MP32, installed before he received the car for his 16th birthday. Thread II. It was garaged until a couple months ago, when he could afford to pay for the insurance on it, which is about $100.00 per month now that he's 18.

It was pulled out without cutting wires or damaging the dash. Guess I should be thankfull, eh?

I should be thankfull I didn't catch the sonuvabitch, 'cause I'd have torn his fvckin' head off! :|

Well, that unit was plenty good enough, so what is the current best bang for the buck replacement for it? It was only about $150.00 when I bought it, so one should be available for half that price now, right?

Edit: Forgot to mention the police took the information before I finished the second sentence in this post. I started it just as I hung up the phone to call them!

Damn. That sucks. :(

I had my head unit stolen once, and the next unit I bought was an Eclipse. If you get it installed by an authorized retailer, you get a theft warranty included. If its stolen, they replace it for free. I believe they still do this.

I think it's really funny that you bought your son a Grand Marquis. I don't think it's funny that they stole his headunit though. You can get headunits for cheap although the cheap ones are going to suck.

Was that a 'cheap unit' in there? It didn't suck, so I'd be happy with the EXACT same thing. Should be cheaper by now, since MP3 units were rare when I bought it.

BTW, I think it's pretty funny you guys buy tiny econoboxes and thing they're the shlt.

On the next one he installs glue/solder razor blades to the back of the deck.

$150 is rather low for an mp3 CD player back. I paid $150 for mine about 8 months ago (not from crutchfield... on ebay). I wanted something basic, I didn't need the front to popout and start breakdancing to the music for me. I guess you can try crutchfield's search, find a model that supports mp3 or whatever features you want, and find the best deal for the models you like. I like my pioneer, but your son's looks nicer than mine anyway.

AIWA is lowend, which may be fine for what you are looking for...not everyone needs more. You can find a MP3 player from $129 and up usually. Perhaps $99 on sale.

Sounddomain.com, thezeb.com, crutchfield.com, etc are the places to look.

Good luck, you may want to put an alarm on it now, usually thieves keep returning with car audio crap.

I'll tell ya Onery, spend the extra bucks (Or make him chip in) and get an Eclipse. Not only is the quality second to none, but the entry level models are fairly well priced (Around 250 starting, may be able to negotiate a bit down) but they have theft warrenty for 1 year.
When mine was stolen they took half my dash (Ford football dash :( ) This was in January, I had no heat for a month. But, it cost me all of 30 minutes of my time to drive down to the shop I bought my Eclipse from, give them a copy of the police report and wait about a week and a half to recieve my new one. Completely free.
Granted, its only a 1 year theft warrenty coverage, but its WELL worth the piece of mind in my opinion. Its gets stolen, you get a new one for naught.

Another option, I've HEARD (Havent confirmed) that DEI offers theft warrenty on ALL DEI equipment if you have a DEI alarm. Which means you could have your amps and speakers covered. DEI doesnt make head units, but Eclipse gives you theft warrenty so........

I think you should bytchslap the kid for leaving the car unlocked. I would then make sure he didn't have anything better than an AM radio to listen to for the next year.

That's just me, though.

This would make the perfect "Man this MP3/CD player I stole rocks" parody.
Sorry to hear about the theft. It is actually getting harder to find them cheaper than $150. Mines basic an cost $200.

The thing would have probably been taken anyway. This way they save themselves new locks and/or windows.

Or they may have not even bothered and gone next door to steal the neighbor's stereo. Nothing like making it even easier for someone to rip you off.

A non high-end alarm system I think doesn't slow down a theif much - it just means more repairs. Some friends of ours had theirs taken and now had to pay for new locks. If they'd have left their doors unlocked they'd have lost only their player (plus if they'd not have left the faceplate in the glove compartment!).

I would hardly consider my Acura Legend an econobox but that's just me. I'd much rather drive that than a Grand Marquis and I'd take an econobox over a boat anyday :D

If his neighbor had a stereo they'll have taken it as well.

They paid for your dash, too?

The city we live in is not known for theft and crap, but the mall is behind us, and it does have problems with that. I'm locking the gate to access the mall. I left it open for the sake of the neighborhood, but that's just too bad, now.

Skoorb's right about what happens when you lock the car. I'd be looking at replacing a window as well as the stereo at this point. It's different if it's in a parking lot though, because there are people around there. My van full of tools is right next to his car. It is locked, but if tools get stolen, I can easily meet the deductable which would include fixing glass.

Touche. ;)

It is funny, but there's nothing really wrong with a Grand Marquis, especially for a first car ....

It is reliable... because its built on a decades old proven platform. But it also has an "old person" stigma. So don't be surprised when he sells it in favor of a 240SX or something. :p

a lot better than that aiwa one and a good value for a deck with mp3 capability

That's Ikesound.com....forgot to include them....scala is a good guy as well, I think if you go through ebay it works out cheaper *if* no one else bids.
