Someone maxed out my CC in 2 days...

I got an email from Netflix that my card was denied ... I got online to check it out and there is all kinds of charges on my statement made in CA and I live in MI. I call in customer service and they say they have to open an investigation...?
I mean clearly .. I am calling you from Michigan and there is pending transaction made in California. She said I have to call back in 72 hours and solve the problem.
She said your new card is on its way ? I am thinking you serious, my business is done with you guys...lol

I paid off my card in the beginning of the month and never used it, now it is maxed out...lol

Do you guys have any similar stories, and how it ended ?

I never had to deal with this before, but she said I am not going to be charged for something I didn't authorize.

Edit: Things are making progress. They will email me some letter to sign, and within 2 weeks the charges will voided on my bill I guess.

It's not the CC Companies fault that someone stole your CC information.

A lot of the fault is probably that retailers accept cards pretty easily, without ID, etc.

I had a similar experience last month, except HP called me when someone tried to buy a laptop with my Discover card number.

I had to do exactly what you do, call back in a few days. When I did, they asked which charges were mine, and which weren't and they removed the bad transactions. All in all, it was fairly painless dealing with Discover.

And, there really is no reason to blame the card company if they are willing to work with you.

I'm surprised they said YOU have to call back in 72hours. Regardless, why is your business done with them? If anything, assuming they solve it without penalty to you, that would be a big kudos to them and earn my loyalty.

Dispute all the questionable charges IN WRITING to the CC company or it will come back to haunt you.

Pull all 3 credit reports immediately and look for newly opened accounts, put a fraud alert on all 3 as well. Call any new creditors and tell them you didn't open the account. Again, follow up IN WRITING about anything you're disputing.

This will take forever to clean up. Sucks, but that's the reality.

I had my identitly stolen back in the early 90s - I caught it within 2 days of it starting (a jewelry store called to verify some info) and it still took me over 6 months to clear it all up. Granted, Identity Theft wasn't that hot of a topic back then, so things may be easier nowadays, but stay on top of it.

QFT.

I was fairly neutral before my fraud incident, now I feel really good about Discover.

I totally agree. CC should go with ID .. I don't know why they don't do it.

It is done because I was on the phone for 30mins to talk to someone. That someone was not friendly to me. She ask if I had a roommate that took my card and used. First she asked where I was calling from and I said home Michigan, and the pending transaction are in CA ... I tried to point that out to her ... and she just got attitude with me.

Back when I had Bank One they your picture on the debit card (that ended when they were bought by Chase). I guess Bank of America still does it. I don't understand why CC companies don't provide you some way to email/mail/upload them your picture so they could do the same.

Similar experience last year. What you need to get done right away is a police report. The CC company ask you to do it anyway.

When it happened to me they caught it very early and stopped it for me. Had only about 200 bucks charged. They said something similar to me, we will get you a new card. I told them to remove my account completely. But this was after I resolved everything.

After i filed my police report I gave the CC company the info from that, i think it was the case number and the phone number where they could reach the detectives. Then after a few weeks it was cleared up. i did have a snag in the beginning where they put my investigation or whatever in a different section where it just sat there. So of course I was a pest to them about this because I wanted it cleared up fully.

After that was resolved it only took a few weeks to get done. I believe the outcome that they came to was someone used my number on a fake card and went to town with it in various locations. thats what they said anyway, who knows. What i know is that I was due for a new card and I never got that new card. I tried telling them this but they don't listen too well.

And also the officer who took my report followed up with me which I thought was great. I let him know the cc company fully took care of it. He did offer me advice about getting a free credit report done and things like that when I went down.

good luck to you and don't worry too much.

my CC (BOA) has a picture of me on the top left and retailers still ask for my ID. i was like, "okay, here's my driver's license."

i agree with you, retailers should've asked for ID.

This is not and ID theft. I check my credit report regularly (at least 2 times a month), there no new accounts on there. I think i should be good, but I will keep alert now.

LOL. Seriously, your interpretation of attitude might be off. But the questions she asked were totally routine and necessary to prevent getting screwed themselves. Anyway, you can't withstand a little attitude from one phone conversation, with an employee you'll never speak to again, during the busy shopping season of the year, even if the company proves their worth and help you solve this? Damn, you're sensitive.

Not sure where you're going on the CA/Mich thing. If that was all it took to flag my CC then I'd be screwed. People travel

Where did you file a police report ?

I am not worried really, I am glad it is only my CC account and not my main bank account.

I totally agree. they asked the same type of questions. in fact a lot more. They ask you things like, do you have siblings, did they happen to 'borrow' it. stupid shit like that. Just answer truthfully. part of they're policy on it i suppose. Remember to be nice no matter what, don't let your fustration show. They should also give you a name and extension of the person working on your case.

Yeah you're right... sometime I get ticked off when asked something irrelevant, obvious, or simply stupid. I have been thinking about canceling the card anyways.

Yeah people travel, but they don't time travel. I mean the transaction are charged today and pending from Bath and Beyond in CA... and I am calling from MI. How is that possible ?

I've got a trans pending in AZ right now but I'm in VA. How did I do that???

had it happen, no problem... they send you a piece of paper that you have to sign saying you certify that xxx transactions are fake, then take it off your account, go to the store who sold the item, and then grant chargebacks since you they don't have your signature on file

quite painless really, just a small PITA that you have to get a new CC

sure

Well, could've bought something from an online vendor who processes CC payments in AZ (I live in FL, Newegg CA charges pop up all over my credit card statement, :Q gasp!) or bought something in AZ, flown back, and not had the charges go through (not be pending) until the next morning.

Edit: Things are making progress. They will email me some letter to sign, and within 2 weeks the charges will voided on my bill I guess.
