So they market it that way.

That's what I don't understand...it's not upscale at all, it's just without condiments of any sort.

The market fresh sandwiches are certainly a more "classy" sandwich than your typical burger and are a huge seller. They were the first fast food chain to offer very large and higher quality chicken strips vs the little press nuggets that the others did.

Their french dip and specialty sandwhichs come on a bun that is more like you'd get from a deli. They've really been the leaders in the "premium" market that others are trying to capture. McDonalds "chicken selects" were a direct attempt to copy Arbys. McDonalds and Wendy's also released premium salads after Arby's had their Marketfresh ones. Once Arby's started moving to their higher end breads/rolls McDonalds put out their premium chicken sandwiches using similar style rolls.

There is even a whole snopes article on the issue.

This is what the beef really is:
1) They take beef and add a brine-like solution. This is ground into a sticky paste.
2) Whole chunks about golf-ball sized of roast beef are mixed in.
3) The thing certainly does look like a gelatinous blob. But there isn't any gelatin added as far as I know.
4) It comes in a 10 lb plastic bag that you cut open and put on a rack in the oven for 3-4 hours or so. In the oven, it further solidifies into a processed beef roast.

You won't see any blobs of fat or veins as you would normally see in a roast, because for the most part it was finely ground.

Interesting side note: As the Arby's sandwhich makers slice the roast, they will occasionally get BB shot from some kid that didn't kill the cow. Hopefully, they properly remove the BBs before serving you the beef.

As for the OP: it is a clear notch above McDonalds and Taco Bell in quality. And, they don't cater towards kids with play centers and cartoonish characters. Basically, it isn't a place that kids like. So, they advertize it as fast food for adults. It is still fast food though - don't expect to get filet mignon.

It's a roast beef sandwich, not a cheeseburger. I don't put mustard or pickles or tomatoes on my hot roast beef either.

Arby's is fantastic, easily my favorite fast food place. The beef n' cheddar sandwich just may be the greatest fast food item on the market....and they do have things you don't find at most fast food restaurants, like the market fresh sandwiches.

Arby's >>>>>>>>>> Burger King >>>>>>>>>>>>> McDonalds.

With that said, if you want a real burger go to Chili's or Ruby Tuesdays and stop bitching.

Actually, it's not fair to compare Arby's to BK or McD's. Arby's is sort of like Taco Bell - a different kind of food. I will say, their "feature" sandwiches are overpriced though. 5 for $5.95 for the win, I'll take 2 Arby Melts, 2 curly fries and a drink thanks!

Their "roast beef" is gross, but I might be spoiled by all of the fantastic Greek sub shops that serve up delicious roast beef sandwiches/subs.

Roast Beef is the logical evolutionary point where the hamburger wishes it could be...

Not a fan, but when I was a kid I used to take a tonne of their horsey sauce for my own sandwiches. Loved that stuff.

Eat Fresh, what is that?

I like Arbys, but don't eat there very often.

1. Curly Fries own, as already mentioned numerous times. Rally's or Checkers are the only places that have fries that even come close to comparing.
2. the fried cheese sticks rule, not many fast food places have them, they are DELICIOUS!
3. Arby's has absolutely the best chicken sandwich I've ever had, with the exception of Chic-Fill-A. Anyone who's had one would say the same.

I've never seen a ball pit, clown, or happy meal w/toy at Arby's so I would say it is more grown up than some of its competitors.

"i'm so hungry i could eat at arby's"

They don't have that anymore. Was 5 for $5.95, then 5 for $6.95, now they've killed it altogether. That was the only real good deal on their menu, with that gone, what's the point...

My ex was a supervisor for an arbys. I've seen what it looks like before its cooked for several hours. Its just a huge gelatinous glob. Its like spam but with extra food coloring and cooked extra long.

arby's tastes good & spam does 2

I'm guessing the cows are shot at by bored teenagers with BB guns (there not being much to do in Iowa and stuff). When the roadt beef is being sliced at Arby's, the BB are still firmly lodged in the meat-- but hopefully are removed by whoever is doing the slicing.

I rarely eat fast food, but I actually like Arby's on occasion. They have a decent Reuben sandwich, their curly fries are the best fries this side of Rally's/Checkers, their Jamocha shake is pretty good, and they have unique "snack" items (like mozzarella cheese sticks, jalapeno poppers, and onion petals).

Their RB sandwiches are mediocre, but can be salvaged with Horsey Sauce (the King of fast food condiments). The specialty chicken sandwiches are exceptional, and as previously noted the Jamocha Shakes, Curly Fries and Onion Petals are unparalleled in fast food.
