I really don't get it. They're advertised as being "more grown up" than their other fast food counterparts. How is having two slices of bread with some beef in the middle constituting sustenance for the mature palate? The cost is about the same, so why would I want to pay for a sandwich with nothing on it? It's not like the beef is of particuarly high quality or anything.

Arby's fans, please explain the reward here to me.

arby's is terrible. i once went there and bought some sort of fries stuffed with something, it must have been vomit. and they dont even do the 5 for $5 anymore, it's like 4 for 6.75 or some crap.

"i'm so hungry i could eat at arby's"

I just want to bring to everyone's attention that arby's roast beef is not "meat".

My ex was a supervisor for an arbys. I've seen what it looks like before its cooked for several hours. Its just a huge gelatinous glob. Its like spam but with extra food coloring and cooked extra long.

5 for 5 was the only good deal, now it's long gone and sucks.

Marketing is a mysterious woman. Arby's has rebranded themselves into a "premium" fast food chain. No gimmicky childrens meals or play areas. The new stores are usually very elegant for a fast food chain - mahagony flooring and trim, hardwood tables and chairs, ect.

Their sandwiches are more of an upscale sort and just different than what Hardee's, BK, McD offer.

So they market it that way.

Gawd. I haven't eaten in Arbys for years and years. As a kid, I used to go sometimes with my Mom in the summer. We would get our disturbingly gray, profoundly tasteless mystery meat mounds and then absolutely ENGULF them in their horseradish sauce and their BBQ sauce.

We would take our own squeeze bottles of each (there were mulitples on the serving tables) back to our seats with us so we could make each bite palatable.

Then, they tasted OK.

My Dad, whose Mom was French, was an excellent cook. You couldn't have gotten him to eat an Arby's sandwich even if you put a gun to his head.

Edit: Ironically, one of my Dad's favorite meals was his own TRUE roast beef with his own home made Yorkshire pudding.

Roast beef sandwich wise, probably not really any more mature wise, but if you consider their market fresh sandwiches and horse radish sauces, I would say it's targeted to a more mature group.

I worked there for 3 years cutting that beef. The meat isn't what you'd expect. Like mentioned above, it isn't slabs of whole roast beef like you'd find in a supermarket.

There is even a whole snopes article on the issue.

This is what the beef really is:
1) They take beef and add a brine-like solution. This is ground into a sticky paste.
2) Whole chunks about golf-ball sized of roast beef are mixed in.
3) The thing certainly does look like a gelatinous blob. But there isn't any gelatin added as far as I know.
4) It comes in a 10 lb plastic bag that you cut open and put on a rack in the oven for 3-4 hours or so. In the oven, it further solidifies into a processed beef roast.

You won't see any blobs of fat or veins as you would normally see in a roast, because for the most part it was finely ground.

Interesting side note: As the Arby's sandwhich makers slice the roast, they will occasionally get BB shot from some kid that didn't kill the cow. Hopefully, they properly remove the BBs before serving you the beef.

As for the OP: it is a clear notch above McDonalds and Taco Bell in quality. And, they don't cater towards kids with play centers and cartoonish characters. Basically, it isn't a place that kids like. So, they advertize it as fast food for adults. It is still fast food though - don't expect to get filet mignon.
