I like Arbys, but don't eat there very often.

They make the sub right there in front of you. It's fresh.

Arbys = The incredible shrinking portions.

Last time I went there was about 5 months ago when one opened nearby. I bought about 8 bucks worth of various foods, and left annoyed and still fairly hungry. Certainly not the Arbys from 20 years ago, but then, what is? It may be fast food catering to adults, but the tiny portions and bun sizes are clearly kiddie meal sized.

Oh man, when I discovered Arby's for the first time while I was in college I thought I landed in roast beef heaven (yeah I had LIMITED choices then). They slapped layers and layers of the meat between two sour dough buns. It constituted BULK BEEF.

I worked there for 3 years cutting that beef. The meat isn't what you'd expect. Like mentioned above, it isn't slabs of whole roast beef like you'd find in a supermarket.

There is even a whole snopes article on the issue.

This is what the beef really is:
1) They take beef and add a brine-like solution. This is ground into a sticky paste.
2) Whole chunks about golf-ball sized of roast beef are mixed in.
3) The thing certainly does look like a gelatinous blob. But there isn't any gelatin added as far as I know.
4) It comes in a 10 lb plastic bag that you cut open and put on a rack in the oven for 3-4 hours or so. In the oven, it further solidifies into a processed beef roast.

You won't see any blobs of fat or veins as you would normally see in a roast, because for the most part it was finely ground.

Interesting side note: As the Arby's sandwhich makers slice the roast, they will occasionally get BB shot from some kid that didn't kill the cow. Hopefully, they properly remove the BBs before serving you the beef.

As for the OP: it is a clear notch above McDonalds and Taco Bell in quality. And, they don't cater towards kids with play centers and cartoonish characters. Basically, it isn't a place that kids like. So, they advertize it as fast food for adults. It is still fast food though - don't expect to get filet mignon.

interesting info about the beef.

it still tasted good every now and then just like a big mac or a whopper or whatever, so i will continue to eat it

Perhaps that is your body's way of saying you eat too much? I'm full after just a french dip with no fries.

it's actually some soylent-green like substance that comes as dry powder and then they add water and bake it into a brick and slice it up.

No, I'm not a manager, I left it for better work years ago.

"Speef" made me laugh.

whoa can you explain the BB part? I didn't understand it.
Kids go out having fun. They take their BB gun and shoot cows. There isn't much else to do in the rural areas I guess. The BBs don't kill the cows and instead just get stuck in the muscle. Farmers might not see this and the cow slowly heals up around the BB.

Arby's somehow doesn't filter out the BBs in their meat processing. About every 6 months or so you hear this bouncing "clink" sound when you slice the meat. You look down, and next to the pile of freshly sliced meat is a BB.

That is about all there is to say on the BB subject.

Another odd occurance that I can't explain is silvery iridescent beef. Every once in a while a few slices would have a mother-of-pearl look. It tasted fine and the manager said that it was shown to be normal and healthy (claiming it was something to do with the fat content). I just didn't like the look. So I'd go against her wishes and toss that portion of the meat. Can anyone explain it?

Meat contains iron, fat, and other compounds. When light hits a slice of meat, it splits into colors like a rainbow. There are various pigments in meat compounds that can give it an iridescent or greenish cast when exposed to heat and processing. Wrapping the meat in airtight packages and storing it away from light will help prevent this situation. Iridescence does not represent decreased quality or safety of the meat.

It's really common in lunchmeats, so it makes sense to hit it at Arbys.

Since you have no clue what I ordered you have no justification for saying that. And I don't eat beef, too. I ain't touching anything but their dinky bun chicken sandwiches and their undersized sides. And at any rate, I won't be going back. For 5 bucks I can go to Shlubway and get a foot long with chicken and bacon and all the vegies I want. Why waste my appetite and money on petite portions fit for waifs? And since I usually eat one meal a day, it better fill me up when I eat it.

At Blimpie, they not only make the sub right there in front of you, they slice the meat right there in front of you as well. A claim Subway cannot make (unless they're liars).

it's all about luxury... you could be eating a lexus, but are eating a chevrolet instead. the only way arby's could be better is if their food trays had led backlighting.

;)

I have to laugh (rather loudly) when people are saying they would rather eat Subway because it is better?? WTF? Both establishements basically use lunchmeat/deli meat... whether it is roast beef, or sodium filled turkey and bacon. Sure, Subway might have the option for more veggies, but even then, their chicken breast subs are little peices of chicken heated in a microwave for 15 seconds. I do not consider that any better than the chicken at Arby's or Mc Donalds, etc.

I like Arby's because it is something different. Just like I like Taco Bell because it is something different as well. Not to talk healthy, because I know it is not, but Arby's chicken salad sandwich is incredible. SO tasty. It has chunks of chicken, grapes, apples walnuts on whole wheat bread. YUM!

After reading this thread I'm so tempted to leave my lunch in the fridge and go get a chicken bacon and swiss sandwich from Arby's instead.
