Not to crap on your post but... It might just be "your" monitor and not all the NEC monitor's. I've got two friends who bought these same monitors at Staples last year and they do a lot of text processing. Sharp from corner to corner, so it would appear with this small sample that your's may have varied from norm ;)

"My other question is the store also had an I/OMagic 48x16x48 for $19.99. Is this model any good?"
48x benq was in the ones @ od before -- i/o magic benq

"btw...they also had a Cendyne (Lite-on) 52x internal burner on the shelf. "
what price? :D

I don't think the IO Magic external 48X is a BenQ. I got a silver front plate with firmware A.B1.
Anyone got any ideas what these are?
Thanks.

It was an external but the face of the burner looked like the one in the pic.

Yesterday I went to the Brooklyn Center, MN store and they had two USB 2.0 Cendyne cdrw drives, model number was LTR****, so I'm assuming it's Lite-On? $30 each. They also had a couple of internal cdrw's available, $20 each. Didn't look at model number though.

the external you looked at was a Liteon..most of the boxed internal Cendynes are Benq.

Where do they usually keep these clearance items in the store, I couldn't find any of them at my OM, all they had were some digital label maker for $19 and a bunch of Mad Dog(?) 52x Cd burners for $29 after a $20 mail in rebate.

-NEC 19" CRT monitor, forgot the model. $119.
-Lexmark Multifunction X63 refurbished. $29.

Update with more clearances.
-I/O Magic External 48X CDRW drives. $19.
-Cendyne External 48X and 52X CDRW drives. $29.
-Cendyne Internal 52X CDRW Drives. $19.

I'll post more if I can find anything else.

The external cendyne 52s are liteons. The case is easy to pry open. Two screws under the front feet and two in the back to hold the i/o plate. I will try to put in the cendyne dvd+r(rebagded nec 1100a).

The io magic is way too flimsy to open.

Not all of them oslama. The 1st one I picked up (that I've since exchanged for a Lite-On) was an Asus based on the model number.

they might be gone now. deal has been going for a week at least... plus some areas might have not had any stock when the present wave of clr started (to begin with)

The I/O Magic is very easy to open. Just take the 2 side strips, starting from the back and peal away from the side using a knife under the strips to release the tabs. Slide them forward to release the front of the strip. The top comes right off. Two screws inside hold the circuit. I didn't remove the drive but I believe that the screws are under the labels on the bottom. If anyone has taken the drive out please let us know how you did it!

The 8x Dual format Pacific Digital DVD burner (Rev. 1 only) are Lite_On's (851s) and are 149.00 - instant 40 off = 109 - 40 MIR= 69.00!!! I used my 10 off 40 card they mailed me a while ago so my total will be 59.00, when the rebate comes of course.

Rev. 2 are BTC or something, never tried.

Cendyne was a bit tough to open but i did get in a dvd +r, but the alignment on the ide cable and dvd drive pinout is off a bit so had hard time getting the drive all the way in. There is a metal clip on the ide cable that keeps it from being flush.

NOW I HAVE A EXTERNAL DVD+R FOR $80 ($50 dvd+R and $30 for the external case + a internal liteon 52x cdrw)

I got the side strips and the top off the iomagic and will try to get the drive out and switch the ide cables. There is half inch room to accomadate the cendyne ide cable.

The drive screws are under the labels

Update: I swapped drive in the Iomagic and it works

NOW I HAVE A EXTERNAL DVD+R FOR $70 ($50 dvd+R and $20 for the external case + a internal Benq 48x cdrw)

Its so beautiful. I am chokin.... up.....:(:D :p

I have the Cendyne model but I'm having trouble getting the case open. I've taken off the screws on the bottom and the two at the back. I tried pushing in the two tabs on each side but can't get the front off. Am I going at this the wrong way? Thanks for any help.

What about the faceplate oslama? Does that come off too?

I tried taking mine apart last night and had no luck.

oslama - is there a way you can explain how you got the actual drive out of the IO Magic? I got the top off of it, but getting the drive out was impossible it seems. I spent over 1 hour trying to do it and then gave up. If anyone as a suggestion or pictures of how to do this, that would rock! thanks in advance!!!

Not to crap on your post but... It might just be "your" monitor and not all the NEC monitor's. That may very well be, but I did look around before I posted this and found others having the same issue as I did.

So it may just be an unfortunate few of us that have this problem, or it could be a higher percentage than that. It was just a warning to prospective buyers.

Also, my post was about this specific model of NEC monitor, the 97F, not "all the NEC monitors"

Cendyne 48x12x48 USB 2.0 External CD-RW $19.00

saw two of these at my local OM (Bemidji MN) last weekend, was seriously thinking of getting it just for the enclosure.

Hope its still there this weekend. (box was retaped so I was hesitant)

I have to agree with Lurker. I bought a 97F on clearance and promptly returned it. It had poor focus and flickering at all refresh rates at resolutions above 1024x768.

ok - for those of you having trouble with the cendyne and removing the drive. the tricky part is there are 4 hidden screws under the bottom of the drive. It appears at first there is no way to get to them, however, if you remove the "warning" stickers (2 of them) you will see the screws. They (the stickers) look more like part of the case than stickers, but they do come off and then the drive pops right out. enjoy...

can you locate the notch/openings on the side?

I started at the back left side, wedged a paper clip to keep it from closing back. Then pryed the right back side and wedged a paper clip to keep it from closing back.

did the same with the front "tabs". This a bit hard because the face plate locks into the front tabs, need more leverage.

Once you get the top off just push in the face plate tabs and slide it out.

There's two screws underneath the front feets and the metal plate in the back (top) that shields the ide-usb controller.
