German Shepherd - force bite 260 pounds won't crush your bones, but it will be enough pain to immobilize you and cause tissue/blood vessel damage.

I know firsthand, when I was a kid with a paper route a Shepherd flew out of a garage, grabbed my ankle and pulled me off my bike like a rag doll, luckily the bites were not severe and we were friends with the family so that was the end of it. Our last dog was a Shepherd, the most intelligent dog we've had by far, we had her trained to search the whole house on command, my wife and me really loved her. still miss her 5 yrs later...

So, I'm getting ready to go to bed and I hear loud noises around the corner. A lot of yelling and what sounds like glass breaking.

My car is parked out there so I went to check it out and make sure no one was breaking car windows or something. I walk to the corner and there are 4-5 guys standing around a truck talking loudly. By their actions they all appear drunk. When they see me they start to say things like "Hey motherfucker what you looking at" and then "Hey let's fuck this guy up." I hadn't even said anything yet so I guess they were just super belligerent for some unknown reason.

What they didn't notice though is that I had my dog with me. He was trailing behind a little bit because he was checking out a scent. As a few of them advanced towards my position he came around the corner. Now, he's actually a nice dog but he doesn't like loud noises. So, they were yelling at me, throwing beer bottles on the ground and breaking them, and someone was revving the truck engine. He didn't like that, so he gives off about 4-5 loud and deep barks. Their conversation quickly went from "let's get this guy" to "oh shit". They backed off to their vehicle real quick haha. Even as drunk and as belligerent as they were he still scared the crap out of them.

I told them they should leave the neighborhood and then I called the cops. They didn't actually leave and I think they all got hauled away for a DUI/other charges a bit later. Checked my car out and it was fine.

Not sure why some people get so belligerent when they get drunk? I certainly don't. Usually just get quiet.

Fun times :D

Watch you car and your six for the next few days/weeks. You never know what these guys might do ... alcohol makes people do crazy things.

They were wise to back off. It depends on the individual dog of course, but the best protection dog I ever trained was a shepherd. He was hell on wheels, when he hit the sleeve it was like being struck by a chunk of lumber. One day he went a little high so fast I could not react, and I have a small scar from one of those "knives".

Hmmm, I've got a smallish pit,-64 lbs and your not going to like the experience of trying to "kick the shit" out of her, when we're outside playing she can run and jump so fast and from any angle it would be impossible to avoid her jaws, good luck on that one.. :awe: OP and slightlyhuman, you DO have your dog on leashes, right?, while no one likes drunk, bottle-smashing punks around if your dog were to attack one, specially off-leash you are totally fucked. Open and shut case in court when you get sued unless one of the youths decided to initiate an attack on you (or your dog)..

Yes, dog was on a leash. I never have my dog off a leash, even though he is pretty well trained. I hate it when people let their dogs roam free. Even if it is a nice dog, you never know how other dogs will react to it. Or even if you will scare people even if the dog does nothing.

Just so no one gets the wrong idea, I went out there to check on my property and see what was going on. I had three options.

1) Go out by myself, which apparently would have been a bad idea.
2) Grab my gun and go out there.
3) Grab my dog and go out there.

In my opinion, the dog is the best solution as he will defuse any aggression 99% of the time due to intimidation, and you don't have to risk something happening with a gun.

I will. They are obviously people who live somewhat in the neighborhood as I don't live in a place people travel to go to. However, I don't think they identified my car as being mine so it would just be me, and unless they have some sort of weapon I can handle myself decently :)

Cool looking dog.

I'm not an angry drunk, I don't understand people who want to fight when they are drunk. It seems like I wouldnt even want to drink if I got like that.

gj OP, sounds like it all worked out.
If you had taken your gun out there, who knows what would have happened.

That raises the ante extremely high.

I never understood this kind of thing either. Perhaps they have to suppress their homoerotic tension somehow?

@ OP: Good thing nothing bad happened. Smart thing to just avoid those kinds of people and just call the cops.

Good, I don't blame you for checking up on your car, I don't trust today's teens, (ANY color), it seems to be cool to carry a gun and I would hate for my dog (or myself) to get shot at, I would myself just called the cops and let them check out the situation but still I understand your reasoning, by the time the cops actually get there your car might be trashed..

Great story! Love my white GSD boy. He has that awesome deep fearsome GSD bark too that scares the shit out of people. Of course they have no idea that at home he's a loveable lump that likes to lay on the couch with his stuffed kangaroo. :)

Nobody fought back.
I think I could take a dog but it would be a bloody mess.

I've never really had to deal with a dog that genuinely wanted to hurt me. Most confrontations that I've found myself in have been territorial, where maintaining a stance of dominance, yelling, and throwing rocks has kept them at a distance.

I think that it would be one thing to fight off a random dog that's acting on instinct, and another to fight off a police or military dog that is trained in how to subdue humans.

Fucking morons. Being drunk is no excuse. Even if I get drunk to the point of memory loss and severe hangover, never do I act like that much of a worthless shit. Or even get violent for that matter.

Beautiful dog you have there. Sounds like both of you handled the situation perfectly.

That's a great pic. I live Shepherds with a little longer hair than your typical one. Yours had a beautiful coat :)

I much prefer ones with longer hair too, they look cuter and the hair is easier to vacuum.

he was a very good looking shepherd, he always got many compliments at the local GSD club (his father was three times german champion or something), smart as hell too. he had a straight back though, like a working dog, not the curved showdog back.

yours looks like it has an optimal GSD build, mine was a bit too bulky (he weighed about 60kg/132lbs.), it made him less agile so many flowers, bushes and small trees in the yard died by his paws as he trambled them. he also ruined the lawn along the fence as he sprinted back and forth, there was literally no grass left and we had to use a pick-axe to soften up the soil whenever we tried to repair it.

sigh, I can't wait until I move out of the this tiny apartment so I can get another shepherd.

Damn, that could've definitely been a real shitty situation for you OP. Glad you're ok! I'm more of a cat person but I'd love to have a German Shepherd or similar dog (not one of those toy ankle-biter dogs). Very wise to investigate with the dog rather than the gun, and that's coming from someone with a CCW.

I agree with the others about people getting violent when drunk. I've been drunk off my ass more than I'd like to admit (or can remember), but I'm pretty damn mellow when drunk. Fuckin idiots.

I love a good fist fight, especially with a drunk (easy pickens) but i just dont understand the logic behind fearing a dog. Itd be one thing if you had a hyena with you like men do in Africa but any full grown man can kick the shit out a dog. Why would you put your dog at risk like that?
It would take a skilled combat fighter to put a trained attack dog down.
#1.Dogs don't care about your feelings, so they won't bite softer.
#2.Animal poundage is greATER, lb for lb, than human poundage.

A "normal fighter" would be at a disadvantage when jaws clamp down on a limb, break skin and sever blood veins.

A dog better enjoy that first bite it gets in me because its losing its eyes the second it clamps down on me. If you enter a fight with a dog just come to terms with the fact you may get bit, and then ram your fingers into its eye sockets.

I actually lol'd

Obviously a cat is superior...saw what happened and had the balls to go up and bitch slap the deer. That cat knows he's the boss. Had one when I was a kid that could kill anything, tear their throat out. 20lbs of flying death.

IMMA GET YOU BOY!
