I used to be a smoker of 8 years. I am 27 and quit about 6 months ago. I have no plans to start back up and am very happy I quit for many reasons.

I used to smoke in resturants and bars in of course the designated smoking areas. If I went to a place that did not have a smoking area and I needed to smoke, I went outside. I did not see anything wrong with this and I still don't.

Here is what I beleive - I think the issue on whether or not an establishment should be smoking/non-smoking or both should be left up to the owners and no one else. Period, the end. It should not be the states decision.

Nobody is forcing anyone to go to a place they do not want to go or be subjected to something they don't want to be subjected to. IE - nobody is making you go to TGI Fridays and sit in the smoking section. Nobody is making you go to a specific ALL SMOKING bar when your a non smoker. Nobody but YOU is making that choice.

The problem? People need to start making their OWN decisions and STOP letting somone else (THE STATE) do it for them. This causes alot of problems and pretty much strips away your rights.

Since when did all the hubub start with smokers? Wheres all the crap about the alcoholics? You know, the ones that kill people on the road every day?

Again, as a previous smoker - I respected people and did not blow smoke in their face or smoke where a main entrance was - its common courtesy - As a non smoker I expect the same courtesy. I also don't have a problem with smokers and I don't mind eating in a resturant with a smoking section either. That area stinks to high heaven - but I am not eating in there.

So.. whats the problem?

Thanks for that, Spurt. For what it's worth, I am declaring you and Amused winners of this thread.

So.. what's the problem?

Discrimination is the problem.

Let's add cigarettes (required) to the bus.

Everyone on the bus was white and smoking. Rosa gets on without a cigarette.

If you say so. Your point is moot tho. There is no smoking on public buses period and has been that way for years. Any other analogy? Your also making reference to white vs black. Again, another poor analogy because there are black and white smokers. Smokers as a whole, black, white, men, women, gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, handicapped, little people, short statured, whatever your title is.

Are you a smoker or non smoker?

the bar i work in allows smoking.......one of the benefits of being in a town thats its own city. and since they have their own PD they just choose not to enforce it. we get complaints here and there, but since its mostly single 20 somethings they deal with it b/c of the great social scene.

i know people that drive out of the way to come to our bar b/c of it.......almost 30 min extra commute.

so if ur telling me the smoking ban doesnt hurt business, you dont know a thing about the bar business.

though i do agree on the ban if there is food being served, thats just gross.

WHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! I want to smoke, kill myself slowly, annoy the crap out of those around me, and defy the will of the majority!!! God dammit, it's my right!!! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

This isn't about smokers. This is about bar owners.

And the majority in most bars are smokers.

No, it's pretty much about smokers. Why would a bar owner give a fvck about this (unless he's a smoker of course)? If smoking is banned in all bars how does this hurt a bar owner? It doesn't make people want to go to other bars because smoking is banned in all drinking establishments.

Bars were the only haven left for smokers where they didn't feel like second class citizens. You could goto a bar and not feel like a criminal for smoking. Now that they can't even smoke in the bar ... the smokers are going to stay home.

You can declare them whatever you like, but in the real world, whether they like it or not, the smoking bans will continue, they will get stricter, and eventually include private property as well (I'm gathering this from my excellent crystal ball, now available from the Egg on hot deal - $99.95 shipped!).

In fact, just today: Belmont ban would include private residences as well.

I personally don't like getting onto the slippery slope of having the government decide what you can do in your own home, but businesses (including bars) are fair game.

All this is actually really funny.

In VA - the state runs and controls all the alcahol. I am not sure if its the same else where but I can assume?

If that is the case, the stat is just taking away from their profits. Here is how I see it..

Bar = Customer/Smokers = Bar buying lots of liqour = money for the state

Bar = no smoking = bar buying less liqour = less money for the state

Bar - no smoking = out of business = lots less money for the state

Bar = Smoking thats how it has always been. Its a place to relax, chill, unwind and have a great time. Why can't people just let it be?

If you live in a an Apartment in Denver you cannot smoke.

My wife and I were flanked on each side by smokers when we were in a Denver apartment. We were smoked out of our home on many occasions when they were really cranked up.

The new law went into affect after we left Denver.

I bet we would enjoy that apartment a lot better now that smoking is banned even inside private apartment homes.

That makes a whole lot of sense. By smoking, they infringe on your right to use your apartment without interference and exposure to smoke / stink. Why should you have to move out of your apartment because of their stench? Banning smoking in apartments is a good idea, just like banning it in bars. Why should you have to risk your health or visit another bar because of someone else's filthy habit?

Risk your health?? You inhale worse crossing the street. I'm all up for separate areas/no smoking near food - but banning it in your own home??? Good God watch out for the thought police

I think smoking should be ban everywhere, there is no need for the tobaco free people to have to breath in the 2nd hand smoke... How is it fare to us???
