meh, I always thought his voice was whiny and weak so I never bothered to listen to the lyrics. I've always associated him with trashy wigger types as well.

I think Eminem is definitely in top 5 rappers of all time.

Those people on my list are legends. Many of them are pioneers of Hip Hop back when it was just a cool thing to do rapping with your friends back in the 80's and early 90's.

What as Eminem pioneered for Hip Hop?

Oh yes, he's a White Rapper.

What else?

Anyone who knows anything about Hip Hop and Rap know exactly who those people in the list are and what they have done.

Just because they pioneered hip-hop doesn't meant they are the best at it. Everything evolves over time and I think some of the lyrics that Eminem writes are just insane. It's not just about rhyme and rhythm but about tone, atmosphere, and style too.

Here's a breakdown of one of his songs and I think the uploader breaks it down very nicely.

It's not baseless or unfounded, but eventually you just need to forgive for your own sake, not theirs.

After going through his own drug problems, he publicly stated on numerous occasisions that he loves his mother and understands the disease(s) she was suffering from.

If you listen to his newer stuff, the topic of his mom rarely comes up (if at all). I think he has come to terms with the situation.

Cool, you just described all 8 of the hip hop artists I listed. If it wasn't for dudes like Rakim and Nas who, without a doubt...write better shit than Emineim, there probably wouldn't be and Kendrick Lamar or Lupe Fiasco types.

Much of the lyrics Nas wrote are just insane

Hip Hop and Rap was seen as a joke in the 80's and wasn't really taken seriously until the late 80's - mid 90's where every single one of those people on that list personally came out with hot singles and records that people are STILL talking about.

Eminem can write, cool...but is he doing anything that Jay-Z hasn't done? Biggie? Tupac?

Nas-World Is Yours
Eric B and Rakim - Paid In Full
Queen Latifah - Latifah's Had It Up To Here

Just a few examples on songs that made Hip Hop/Rap so popular. This shit would have died a long time ago without some of these MCs

I could go on!

Yes, everything evolves over time...but, these people are Founders of Hip Hop/Rap. Em is not. And yes, they were and are the best at what they did.

Ask yourself this...if Eminem wasn't a white dude...would he have so much notoriety? At the time he came out, there were ZERO white dudes rapping on his level. Right now, I can name two who have a better flow than he does (and they are also considered "Underground").

There are also a number of black rappers who are considered "Underground" that are better than Em.

I'm just sayin. Its not that the guy cannot rap...its the fact that he is so overrated. That's why so many people took issue with the fact that "The Source" magazine named him the best rapper alive back in the early 2000s. That was major BS.

Who are these rappers and more importantly who considers them as better?

If there's any rapper I can't stand, it's Jay Z. His flow doesn't work for me at ALL.

Even his breakdown in "Suit and Tie" is WTF.

I like the old Jay-Z better than the new Jay-Z

And yes, I agree...his suit and tie verse was garbage.

Emimem is SO overrated.

Oh yes...and Jay Electronica

Exhibit C

^^^ This song alone is better than 99.9% of that "I hate my mom" bullshit Eminem has ever put out.

Shiny Suit Theory Ft. Jay Z

Jay Electronica - Renaissance Man

*Edit* Oops, Dana Coppafeel and Action Bronson can't be in this post.

We get it, you think Eminem is overrated and you are entilted to your opinion. However, there is no collective voice that has crowned the likes of Jay Electronica (or any other rapper, underground or otherwise) as "better" than Eminem.

So what?

Is that the best response you have?

You asked me for something, I gave it to you....

Do you even listen to Hip Hop & Rap?

You seem to have some issues with Eminem that have nothing to do with his rap talent.

First off how the hell is being white in a predominantly black genre a plus? You keep bringing his race up like it's the reason why he's so successful. It's not, the dude has raw talent regardless of what you say. He can skin any rapper alive right now in a free-style battle or otherwise. Do you know what Dr. Dre said to "The Game" when he first started working with him? Don't mess with the white guy.

Second, don't ever put Jay-Z and Eminem in the same sentence lol. Jay-Z is a good businessman and a mediocre rapper at best.

Third, You keep saying "Look! All these rappers that came before Eminem, they are so good," that's cool and I agree to an extent they did push the genre forward and were great artists but none of that detracts from Eminem and his body of work...

Fourth, Eminem is from the Underground....it just so happens that his talent was recognized by Dr. Dre and that catapulted them both to success. I listen to Underground rap too but I don't see many people that can best Eminem in talent.

Lastly, if you think that all Eminem ever wrote about is how he hates his mom....well you haven't really listened to his body of work. That's like me saying all Biggie talked about was being a mobster after listening to "What's Beef?" or all Tupac rapped about was being a "thug" and completely ignoring "Changes," "Dear Momma," and "Brenda's got a baby." The main similarity that these rappers share is they draw their lyrics from the events that happened in their lives. Biggie did sell drugs so most of his songs talked about being a gangster and Tupac did have a tough life so he talked about that in his songs. Eminem's mom did fuck his childhood up so of course he's going to rap about that...but that's not all he raps about.

You're beating a dead horse arguing here. The problem with using underground artists in an argument is exactly that, they're underground and you can't expect the general mass to understand your point of view. I respect the underground and mixtape artists hands down but they just can't win over well known artists these days. I'm glad URL is getting more exposure now at least.

First off how the hell is being white in a predominantly black genre a plus?

The same way Venus and Serena being Phenomenal at a predominantly white sport is a plus. The same way Misty Copeland being an amazing Ballerina is a plus.

Whats the problem? I am not the only person in this thread that has said that much of his notoriety seems to be attributed to the fact that he is a white rapper. How many white rappers do we have in Hip Hop that are worth a damn?

He can skin any rapper alive right now in a free-style battle or otherwise. Do you know what Dr. Dre said to "The Game" when he first started working with him? Don't mess with the white guy.

And yet, you say I'm the one making light of his race. :p

Second, don't ever put Jay-Z and Eminem in the same sentence lol. Jay-Z is a good businessman and a mediocre rapper at best.

That's funny...because Jay-Z is typically on the same lists Eminem appears on when it comes to MCs.

Fourth, Eminem is from the Underground....it just so happens that his talent was recognized by Dr. Dre and that catapulted them both to success. I listen to Underground rap too but I don't see many people that can best Eminem in talent.

Eminem's mom did fuck his childhood up so of course he's going to rap about that...but that's not all he raps about.

Everyone was Underground at one point. And are you serious about Dre being catapulted to success because of Eminem? You're kidding..... ^_^

Also...

His mom wasn't the only person targeted by his harsh lyrics when he first hit the scene, I vividly remember lines about his daughter's mother. And sure, that wasn't all he rapped about...

So interesting that he changed up his style after getting some fame. He went from hateful vitrol about his mother and his baby's mother to being a crazy white dude with bleached hair rapping about what his name is and who is the "real" slim shady to...just a regular white guy who is a Dad that raps about real shit.

Too late for me, I wasn't feeling the gimmick when he first came out. He never caught me.

I don't have a problem with him being white. However, its pretty dumb to say he didn't get immediate attention because of his skin color. Don't lie to yourself. He is a rare gem in the rap game. Just like I expect a Japanese dude who could flow to literally blow up the scene.

Good rappper
Amazing lyricist
Incredibly angry
Message his music sends is often bad, even though he has explained that it is just his way of "venting." I can appreciate it for what it is, but I'm not sure most of his listening audience can, or should.

I just find rap to be a boring genre of music, I don't "hate" it for what it is or it's performed by blacks for the most part. There is an exception here and there, "Insane in the membrane" is a fun song but I could never listen to any "artist" that sings about raping his sister or any bullshit like that, it's just appealing to the frustrated teen group that is a difficult time of life adjusting to a lot of things, including family life..

im not sure i understand the ppl here that are arguing against eminem being a ridiculous lyricist. i just listened to the jay electronica - exhibit c someone linked above - this is nothing compared to some of eminem's stuff. all regardless of whether he's white or not - he's just ridiculous

Dr. Dre was successful and popular even before he met Eminem but Dr. Dre hasn't released an album in a .....decade? He's been working on his record label with mostly Eminem/50 Cent.

Yea, he attacked Kim a few times in his songs because she cheated on him with some guy.

I think that he was catapulted to fame by his crazy "shock" lyrics and his "alter ego" Slim Shady more so then his skin color but despite that he mostly raps about the stuff that goes on in his life like drug addiction, relationship problems, death of his friend, depression etc.

He was pretty good. Now? Yikes. Especially with all the artists he collaborates with. I hear new songs on Pandora and go, "Is that Eminem, AGAIN? God damn. So annoying!"
