Soft Porn -- Windows 7.

I'm trying to gauge the technology market for the next 12 months.

Thanks for the input.

Windows 7 RC release date is slated for May 5th 2009.

Main release date is sometime between late 2009 to early 2010.

I'll probably buy a new laptop this fall or next spring. If it comes with Windows 7, I'll decide then whether I want to keep it. If it comes with Vista, I'll probably go back to XP.

I don't forsee putting Windows 7 on my desktop anytime soon.

My XP desktop is only 2 years old; I plan to keep it for at least another 3 years.

If I find more time for gaming in the future, I'll probably need to upgrade to 4+ GB RAM (have 2 GB now), which means I'll go with Windows 7 (64 bit). Otherwise, I'll stick to XP for the life of this machine.

I won't buy a new computer, as the ones I have are pretty new. I'll upgrade if there's some compelling reason to do so.

I voted Vista baby :^)

Same here. See no reason to upgrade to W7. Maybe after SP1 is released I'll hope on the W7 bandwagon and it'll be cheaper.

I don't buy PCs; i build them, meaning my OS doesn't come pre-installed...

(Other than the notebook, which will probably be one of the first i transition to 7)

I will be using 7 as my main OS either slightly before retail release or slightly after, depending on how bad driver support from nV, etc, & particular other appz is.

I don't see how driver support would be bad at all since everything that works with Vista works with W7.

I'm running Win7 RC. It's amazing. If you've run all 3 OS, XP, Vista and Win7, you'll run Win7.

It's 10x faster than Vista, blows XP away on Features and is super easy to maintain and install.

If Deus Ex 3 sucks then I will give up on PC gaming.
If I give up on PC gaming I will run Linux.

The only good reason for me to use Windows is the games. For everything else I can easily settle for a free OS.

If Deus Ex 3 rocks I will play it a couple times and then probably switch to Linux.

Not always.

No Ultramon 🙁, for example, & i can't live without it.

Just because nV/AMD have drivers out doesn't mean they work well for all games.

It took nV a year to have half decent drivers in Vista that didn't have random or insanely infuriating issues.

I've run Win7. It's Vista in new clothes, with a couple of additions. It's ok, but nothing to get excited over. The coolest feature is the virtualised XP environment. I don't have much use for that, but it'll be great for companies running expensive proprietary software.

I dual boot W7 RC as well and Vista and there isn't enough to warrant spending money on it yet. I don't notice any speed difference in W7 but I do like that the UAC is toned down A LOT but Vista SP2 is supposed to address that somewhat.

I just got to where I like Vista. I may change in a couple of years barring some amazing must-have aspect of Win 7.

Voted that I'm a Win7 user- have XP on one and Win7 on the other. I'll probably switch after the first service pack..maybe sooner if I like it well enough. XP still works for me, but DX10 would be nice.

I like about 5 years between O/S changes. I'll probably go with Win8 unless I completely get out of gaming. If I do get out of gaming(unlikely), I'll go with Linux.

I got ultramon working. you first have to run it in compatibility mode and disable aero. then when it is running goto the options and disable smart taskbar, add _ button, add_ command, etc. You pretty much have to disable everything. Then go to hotkeys and assign hotkeys instead. I set CTRL-M to move a window between monitors and it works fine. Once you are done disable compatibility mode to get back Aero.
