Soft Porn -- Windows 7.

I've been running Beta 1 on my laptop for awhile now, and absolutely love it. I don't really use my laptop for a lot so I cannot comment on how much faster it is at any tasks, but I've been following a lot of tech journals that have been performing tests, and they all agree that 7 is basically the fastest Windows OS ever, and beats both XP and Vista at just about every task, which is huge considering Vista was slower at some tasks compared to XP.

I don't think I'll upgrade the laptop to RC1, but who knows. I am awaiting the retail release, and if I can get a good student discount I'll upgrade my desktop.

I'm going to run this system for as long as it holds up, then I'll upgrade (using Vista atm, and not a big fan of it).

I would downgrade to XP if I could find the media center edition. I currently use Vista Home Premium, and WMC is a nice feature for someone who watches TV on laptop.

On the other hand, I have no use for windows media player, movie maker, dvd maker, photo gallery and calender. If Win 7 allows user to uninstall these features, I might consider upgrade, given media center is included.

Hmmm.

I voted sticking with XP...
but I'm really contemplating purchasing a macbook
I'll probably dual boot os x & xp

If I can get it for free like I got Vista Ultimate from Club Live a couple years ago, I'll move. Otherwise, probably not. I'm a cheap bastard.

Win7 looks nice. I'm impressed with what I've read and seen. But microsoft has done such a good job on the 360 that I no longer buy windows games and the ones I do buy have mac versions. So I've lost my need of windows altogether. I have to thank them for putting such pressure on the gaming console market to help me leave the last part that was holding me to windows - gaming.

So I'll get my free copy of win7 though work and I'll play with it so I know how to support it. But that is the extent for me.

Vista still seems slow to me.

Win 7 is just snappy, and I love all the little things they have done.

 Win 7!

Vista Sucks!
I'm sticking with XP.

You know what?
Screw that.

We need a 64 bit DOS.

You can get a 64 bit command line in any *nix OS. 😛

Me, I'm sticking with my goal of Linux only my main machine. There are a few apps that have to run under windows, though most will run under an XP VirtualBox. Unfortunately, USB isn't supported in the OSE of Virtual Box.

hummm, I'm running the beta, I don't recall when it expires and I don't know when Windows 7 will be released. Am I going to be screwed the pooch for a few months? I don't want to go back to XP, but being without a working OS will suck. I thought I remember MS saying the beta would run until it's released. But OP made it sound like Win 7 might not be out until towards the end of the year.

I'd run Win7 now if it weren't for the fact the public beta wasn't really upgradable. Hopefully I can get it through my university.. I had to buy Vista retailish because they didn't offer 64bit for staff.

To upgrade from beta you need to:

- Extract the .iso contents to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive
or a directory on any partition on the machine running the old build).
- Browse to the sources directory.
- Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
- Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000.
- Save the file in place with the same name.
- Run setup.exe like you would normally and the version check will be bypassed.

It expires August '09, IIRC.

I got vista ultimate half price through an employee purchase program. If the same goes for 7 I'll probably purchase it pretty early. Maybe wait till the 1st service pack.

Considering I've had my computer since 2002, I think it's now due for an upgrade.
I intend to bypass Windows Vista and jump straight to Windows 7.

I've never used Windows Vista before and I probably never will.

I have Vista on my laptop...it's shiny, but I see no compelling reason to use it over XP...
