So you can't say 'retarded' anymore?

Freedom of speech does not give you the right to yell "FIRE" in a crowded building.
Freedom of speech still means you show discretion. You are not given the right to be insulting. I hate when people hide behind the veil of "Freedom of Speech" thinking they can say whatever whenever they want or they are having their rights violated.

Being a dick isn't a right. It's wrong.

Society has really become too sensitive. There is a real world out there, I don't go around calling actual people with disabilities retarded. There isn't any sort of miscommunication going on if I call someone retarded, it's because I think they are very stupid. That message comes across just fine.

How does something that offended no actual retarded people end up on national media? All I see is organizations trying to gain power and that is far worse than "omg he used the R-word."

But it's a right to be wrong.

There is a difference between the freedom to do, and the correct moral choice within the society you live.
You can ignore all of it if one wishes. The only thing being, you are free to say whatever the hell you want (for the most part), but so is everyone else. And there can be actions taken that serve as consequence to things said.

But with that said, being a dick is a right. 😛

I prefer to pronounce it RA-Tard myself.... (not sure if you'll get the reference.)

I don't care that this guy called some people retarded, but he's a politician, in the public eye. He has to choose his words more carefully. He's mad dumb for thinking that word was a good idea to use.

Smart people criticizing smart people in the public eye so that stupid people can form a reaction.

If I was in his position, I would label it as slander. The special olympics has no businiess calling for the resignation of a politician, especially considering this outcry was not started by the disabled community but by the president of the organization. If people "using the R-word" is a main priority of the special olympics I would have to say that the President of that organization is incompetant at his job, as he should have more important concerns. He is the one that should resign.

Calling someone a retard doesn't qualify as public endangerment.

Wait wait wait.. A former runner for VP lashed out and called for the CoS' resignation .. on FACEBOOK? That's fucking retarded.

Yep she should lose her political power for that one. I don't go around trying to get people to lose their livelihoods over facebook. Thats irresponsible of her.

There will always be people on either side of party lines publicly stating their dislike for actions of members of the other party, as well as those calling for resignations.. but it's not usually done over Facebook. I think it's pretty sad when people who are supposed to be (or at least were) legit politicians (and I use this term in the slightest way possible when describing Palin) are using Facebook as a pulpit.

You'd think you would be happy. People are just going to call you a dumbass now.

Did I fuck your wife or girlfriend in the past or something? How did they say I was? You always shadow me and seem to have some bad blood against me. Get a life or go get laid...

Obama's health plan (and budget, if you can call it that) is retarded.

There, I said the r word. Retarded. whee! 😀

Your overall point is correct; freedom of speech only protects from government intervention. But the bolded part is dead wrong.

yeah she is dead wrong on that...that's the pacifist belief.

You can pretty much say you *think* someone is a rapist, murderer, etc. You can call them names.

Things that can cause a riot/panic and some verbal threats can land someone in trouble.
