So you can't say 'retarded' anymore?

Your overall point is correct; freedom of speech only protects from government intervention. But the bolded part is dead wrong.

too many sensitive ninnies out there that get OFFENDED if you dont have the same PoV that they do..... and others who get INSULTED out of some sort of empathy, something that doesn't insult them directly, rather they feel the other person SHOULD be insulted and then they make it a personal fight...... too many sissies and busybodies out there.

OK... so, does this mean that I need to start using "mentally challenged" as an insult, so politically correct people can start getting offended by their own phrasing?

We have always called my sister mentally retarded never heard mentally challenged used until recently by the PC crowd. She is 46 and on about a 11 year old level. She is the most kind and caring person you could ever meet. If someone calling me retarded means that I am like her or other special needs people then thanks for the compliment.

Penn and Teller did a great episode on PC where they said overweight people do not have a weight problem they are FAT

I used to work with the mentally retarded & developmentally disabled. And, back then, the diagnoses were "severe mental retardation" "profound mental retardation" - etc. That word was used.

But one day, when one of the guys I worked with did something really stupid, even for him, I looked at him and said (without thinking), "what are you? Retarded or something?" "Yeah, yeah, yeah."

The only solution is to stop speaking ill of people. And describe abnormal characteristics and behaviours with very long names so that society doesn't adopt them for derogation.

I once used the word retarded in front of a retarded person to describe someone else. He laughed his ass off. End of debate.
