So why does the army has no problems with alcohol, but strictly prohibits something as harmless as....

...weed?

I never did get that logic. I can understand their stance about harder drugs. But isn't alcohol much more harmful to one's health than marijuana?

Booze makes you aggressive while weeds makes you lethargic. The Army wants aggressive soldiers.

Because alcohol is oldschool, and so are the generals.

Although the royal navy got rid of the rum ration. damn shame.
and US rations don't have mini packs of smokes anymore neither.

With alcohol, at least, soldiers would do something together even if it's something stupid. It builds companionship. Weed is not like that.

Go blow a face full of weed smoke in your sarge's face stateside....repeat this deep in enemy territory overseas...

I guarantee you get polar opposite reactions.

Then again he may be up for some brokeback mountain action too at that point.

That's more than likely a policy of the host country. Some of the countries in the South West Asian theater don't allow alcohol to be imported.

The military has a huge problem with alcohol. People become stupid when drinking, even stupider when those same people are under stress. Luke AFB gets DUIs every month, despite several solid programs in place to prevent them. The army is even worth. An Airman gets drunk and gets a DUI typically. A soldier gets drunk and assaults someone.

Changing culture, it used to be you'd go to the base clubs after work for a few drinks and they'd have kegs as base picnics. Not any more.

Because alcohol is legal and weed is not. As simple as that.

That's it, really simple! A friend of mine was up for a high ranking position at the embassy. She was asked about the "weed." Said yes to it a long time ago. She was kicked out of the position. The rule is zero tolerance.

BTW, weed is not a safe drug. It has very serious side effects such as destroying motivation and retarding social growth. I know a guy who's in his 50's and has the emotional maturity of a 15 year old. He has no motivation and has no idea about world affairs. He doesn't even know who the Department of Homeland Security is.

BTW, I'm for legalization for medical use. I agree it is a dangerous drug.

Is there any reason to think your friend would be any smarter, more aware or more motivated if drank daily instead of smoking weed?

Sounds to me like your friend would have been a dufus no matter what, and that you're just trying to scapegoat weed, which, in his case is more a symptom of his stupidity and not the cause, you know?

Sure. I know a lot of people who have an evening cocktail, are highly educated professionals, and have great lives. They also remain motivated.

why is weed illegal in the first place? i don't get that logic.

Now, if that question gets handled differently by the US sometime in the future, then the Army will likely have a different stance, depending on how the US looks at it. If it ever becomes legalized to the point you can stroll into a gas station and buy weed, then the Army probably won't care, as long as it doesn't effect your job. Alcohol and tobacco are the same way. Legal to use, alcohol off duty... as long as it doesn't have a negative impact on your job, and isn't something that interferes, then the Army doesn't really care. Legality is step number 1. Anything illegal... well the Army has to abide by US laws ya know.
