How can someone live in the north-east and not have a 4WD or AWD vehicle is beyond me :hmm:

4WD or AWD doesn't help when there is a foot of snow and ice, i put tire chains on my car, makes a huge difference. Most of the people in the ditch are the assholes driving a SUV.

2/3/2011, Chicago gets hit with 15" of snow. Get ready Boston. This will be worse.

Except, everyone here is well aware of what's coming. The MA governor has already ordered that people not drive. Airports, trains and all public transportation is shutting down Friday afternoon.

Sorry, we're not stupid like folks in Chicago. Foot of snow? No, the plows will keep the roads in decent shape. The problem will be the high winds and blinding conditions.

And when it's over, my gf's Honda Fit will have issues with the snow on side streets but my AWD SUV won't.

Accuweather has already started downgrading the accumulation amounts here, why am I not surprised. The most we are supposed to get now is 16"

The forecast was downgraded for my area as well, to 12". I'm still debating whether to try and make it in or not, since there is no snow at all right now, might be able to make it to work just fine but getting home will be a beast.

Hmm... I was going to drive up after work today to North Jersey (Newark area) to see the girlfriend (I'm currently in Philly). I'm not sure if it's going to be too ugly to drive or not by 5pm. Thoughts?

Snowplows and salt. They start salting before the storm even hits in my area, and keep plowing through the whole storm.

I just came down 495 and they were pre-salting the highway.

Looking forward to my 2-3' of snow.

edit: First flakes starting to fall now.

The people in the ditch are the people who don't know how to drive in the snow. The slightest slip and they're on their brakes like white on rice. THAT sends them into the ditch. There may be a correlation between assholes who don't know how to drive & SUV ownership - that remains to be determined. I've driven plenty of times in foot plus deep snow, including off road; 4wd works just fine. I agree with your assessment of ice though...

4wd, awd, it doesn't matter. You're not driving on iced over roads. (Hence the reason I'm in here at this time - no school. Not a flake of snow or drop of rain at the moment, but a lot of areas in our school district were experiencing freezing rain.

I was never 'taught' to drive in the snow, but even I figured it out myself:

1. When you're losing control, turn steering TOWARDS the direction you're slipping to align your wheel, not steer back to the center.

2. Tap brakes so you're not hydroplaning, even I learned this from riding bikes as a kid.

No amount of AWD & fancy tech can match plain cautious & smart driving.

Add:

3. Don't go fast. Slow down in turns.
Seems like the biggest reason people can't drive in the snow. They treat the snow/iced road like its a summer day.

I learned to drive in the snow out of necessity.

Plus I learned in a volare' station wagon and then in a Caprice Classic. I can just about make those cars dance in the snow without losing control.

I'm in that star area.

It started snowing at 8 AM and we've accumulated ~3" so far.

I'm in NYC.

8AM: Some flurries, minimal acculumation

11:32AM (now): Nothing, people are walking around without umbrellas.

I hope snows a lot, I haven't seen proper snow in ages.

Ahh, going with the NAM model's forecast, because it's best for sensationalism. Probably overstates the amount of snow by about 50%.
(Ditto the Weather Channel who is sensationalizing this more than it needs to be, not that it isn't a huge storm.)

Here's the non-commercial National Weather Service's latest forecast: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/okx/FB_Briefings/WxBriefing_FB.pdf 2 feet. Not 3 feet.

About to head home. Roads are all kinds of messed up here. Should have left my car home. It's ice everywhere. :(

Yep. I'll be content if we end up getting 18 -24 inches. That's about the same total from our March 2011 event. The roof held up fine.
