How can someone live in the north-east and not have a 4WD or AWD vehicle is beyond me :hmm:

I survive (although my next car will probably be an AWD Subaru)... a standard snowfall is a couple inches and that doesn't really phase my car.

when we're talking a foot+, I just stay in until the roads are cleared and drive safely. of course, having the luxury of working from home helps with that.

Pretty much this. I'm in PA and I've never felt like I was "missing" anything by not having 4WD/AWD. If it's REALLY bad, I stay home. Otherwise I just take my time and go slow.

It snowed about 6-8" when I first drove my Altima home about six years ago. That was rather unpleasant, but the fact that it was FWD didn't deter me at all. Although, it did provide some amusement for the AWD vehicles that easily flew past me while I attempted to travel up a rather steep hill. :p

I did make it up said hill though... it took a hell of a long time though!

I gave up the 4wd about 6 months ago. I also work at home so its no big deal. I just make sure to have food on hand.

One thing I always do before a big storm is make sure my laptop battery is charged. Have to have something to watch when the power goes out.

So which of these is right? I'm hoping the Weather Channel one. I'd be sad if we only got 4-8".

I'm at ground zero, in the middle of Boston. Work has been canceled for me and my gf. Woot!

We have stocked up the batteries, cheese, tortillas and beer. Charging all the phones and laptops. We're set to go.

I was planning on going out to Boston tomorrow with a couple of buddies for the Extreme Beerfest. A few days ago I saw this storm was coming and thought uh oh... Got the email this morning from United saying that my flight was cancelled, and we were already going to be out there for such a short period of time that we just cancelled the trip.

A lot of caution with this storm, the school district I work at closed for tomorrow before I even left to go home today. I've never seen them call it this early.

Snowplows and salt. They start salting before the storm even hits in my area, and keep plowing through the whole storm.

I have a giant boat for a car and it's horrible in anything over a couple of inches, but I've never had an issue on main roads (other than 1 incident with black ice). 90% of the storms the main roads are always clear, at least in my town. The side roads you just take it slow on.

Due to the forecasted blizzard, my wonderful and generous employer gave us the option of working from home tomorrow.

Naturally, this will be charged as a vacation day.

That sucks. What kind of company?

My boss told me as I was leaving, "don't be a hero and work from home tomorrow".

o_O

Maybe it was a goof and they meant work from home OR charge a vacation day? If not and they're charging you a vacation day regardless I wouldn't be working :p

Snoooooooow!

Wouldn't you know it. Just when we are getting 2ft of snow my back goes out. OK, who's coming over to my house in the Boston burbs to dig my car out?:'(

BTW- I have a Subaru Impreza and love watching other folks spinning their tires in the snow.:)

Environment Canada update:

LONDON - PARKHILL - EASTERN MIDDLESEX COUNTY
9:58 PM EST THURSDAY 07 FEBRUARY 2013
SNOWFALL WARNING FOR
LONDON - PARKHILL - EASTERN MIDDLESEX COUNTY CONTINUED

SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL OF 15 TO 25 CM TONIGHT AND FRIDAY.

A WINTER STORM WILL AFFECT THE REGIONS TONIGHT AND FRIDAY.

SNOW ASSOCIATED WITH A TROUGH AHEAD OF THIS SYSTEM HAS SPREAD INTO SOUTH-CENTRAL ONTARIO WITH A COUPLE CM OF LIGHT SNOW EXPECTED IN MOST AREAS THIS EVENING. HOWEVER, A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IS EXPECTED OVERNIGHT.

THIS TEXAS LOW WILL INTENSIFY INTO A MAJOR WINTER STORM AS IT APPROACHES SOUTHERN ONTARIO TOWARDS MORNING. AN EXPANDING AREA OF HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO WESTERN PARTS OF SOUTHERN ONTARIO NEAR LAKE HURON BEGINNING LATE THIS EVENING THEN SPREAD EAST ACROSS REMAINING REGIONS OVERNIGHT OR EARLY FRIDAY MORNING.

THE HEAVIEST SNOW WILL OCCUR DURING THE FRIDAY MORNING RUSH HOUR ALONG THE HIGHWAY 401 CORRIDOR FROM LONDON ACROSS WATERLOO REGION AND THE GREATER TORONTO AREA. HEAVY SNOW WILL SPREAD QUICKLY EAST DURING THE DAY TO AFFECT KINGSTON THROUGH BROCKVILLE TO CORNWALL. STRONG AND GUSTY NORTHEASTERLY WINDS WILL WHIP UP THE FRESHLY FALLEN SNOW AND RESULT IN VERY LOW VISIBILITY AT TIMES IN BLOWING SNOW.

TOTAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 15 TO 25 CENTIMETRES ARE LIKELY ACROSS THE REGIONS. SNOWFALL RATES OF 2 TO 4 CENTIMETRES PER HOUR ARE POSSIBLE DURING THE HEAVIEST SNOW, AND IF THIS OCCURS, NEAR ZERO VISIBILITY IN THE HEAVY SNOW MAY BE A SIGNIFICANT ISSUE TO DEAL WITH.

HAZARDOUS WINTER TRAVELLING CONDITIONS FROM NEAR ZERO VISIBILITY, AREAS OF HEAVY SNOW AND LOCAL BLOWING SNOW ARE EXPECTED ESPECIALLY ON FRIDAY. RAPIDLY ACCUMULATING SNOW WILL ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. TRAVEL PLANS SHOULD BE CHANGED ACCORDINGLY.

THE SNOW WILL END IN AREAS WEST OF THE GREATER TORONTO AREA IN THE AFTERNOON, IN THE TORONTO AREA IN THE EVENING AND OVERNIGHT IN EASTERNMOST SECTIONS AS THE STORM CENTRE MOVES AWAY.

A TEXAS LOW WILL TRACK NORTHEAST ACROSS ILLINOIS THIS EVENING THEN FOLLOW A PATH OVER LAKE ERIE INTO WESTERN NEW YORK STATE OR NORTHERN PENNSYLVANIA ON FRIDAY. THE STORM CENTRE WILL MOVE AWAY FRIDAY NIGHT AND MERGE WITH ANOTHER WINTER STORM FORECAST TO AFFECT PARTS OF NEW ENGLAND AND THE MARITIMES.

:(
