So, what's the deal with Che?

Alright, I, like many people, went through the public school system until college and have never even heard of Che till this past summer. His visage has inspired a fashion trend among the teenage angst ridden. I really dont know much more than he was very anti-consumerism and a revolutionary in Cuba who may have ordered many people to death. Why is that good? Can anyone explain the fashion-ation with him? (sorry, that was a bad joke) or do most people who wear his face really not know anything about him?

Inquiring minds want to know!

He is the icon rebel. I bet if you asked the people who wear the shirts anything about him they wouldn't know.

I find it more disturbing that you went through school without ever hearing about him.

Like I said, public school. We went through the same stuff in history year after year, not learning much except how to memorize dates... which I did not retain at my current age.

If you can buy the shirts at Hot Topic or a similar store, I doubt the person purchasing it knows who the guy really is. Heh

Pretty much. My brother-in-law got a T-shirt for Christmas that is in the same style of the garden variety Che Guevara portrait, but it's Ronald Regan instead. Too bad most people wouldn't get the joke.

There's not really any reason to learn about Guevara in the average public school education. He's a cameo character when it comes to world history, and aside from his association with Fidel Castro his relationship to US history is barely worth a footnote. In fact, you would probably only learn about him in class in college if you were in a Latin American history class, or perhaps a US history class concentrating on the cold war.

I think I only know about him because I saw causeheads wearing shirts and hanging his poster on the wall so I decided to figure out why all these clowns seemed to revere him.

At my college, the College Republicans actually made Che Guerva t-shirts with Mickey Mouse ears on his head. It was quite funny, although they only sold a handful.

BAM! Dead-on. I didn't learn about him in high school (catholic) or college (state university), so I looked him up myself and figured out why I never heard about him. He's really not that important of a historical figure, and I'm a HUGE history buff, especially when it comes to Russia, WWII, or the Cold War (I took classes on all three in college). He wasn't as significant as you would think, but people who want to be "revolutionary" can't take a more popular or notable revolutionary as their "hero" because they all want to be non-conformists.

Lame.

I always wanted a Trotsky t-shirt just like the Che t-shirts. It would be all red with the black face. Sweet.

So basically, he's not important to the US. I've heard he was Castro's right hand man... is that true? If so, I dont think people should be idolizing him.

He's the Ashlee Simpson of American iconic rebel trendiness. It's a fashion stunt created by some marketing department that thought the Che image looked cool as a rebel statement to market to wannabe non-conformists.

There was a Rage Against The Machine shirt that had Che's face on it back when I was in high school. I'd imagine the popularity of wearing a Che shirt probably got a boost from RATM, though probably less than 1% of the kids wearing a shirt with his face on have the slightest clue as to who he was.

I don't get the whole Che thing. That man was a stupid bastard to say the least. Before he was 'popular' and I learned about him in history class, I equated him with the likes of Hitler and Stalin. He's not a rebel, he was a ruthless incompetent leader who rightfully died. Whatever, let the idiots wear what they want.

I find your smug tone disturbing especially since nobody in this thread, including myself, who went through college ever heard of him.

He's kind of right though, I mean you don't even know what's going on in your own hemisphere...

I guess taking CS courses and playing kiddie games while at school kept you from learning about historic individuals of the past century.

Not knowing who Che is != not knowing what's going on/went on in your own hemisphere ;)
